Helldivers 2 is a phenomenal experience that has been one of the best games since its release in early 2024. It is coming to Xbox as the first-ever PlayStation-published game on Microsoft consoles, and we can’t wait for Microsoft players to join the battlefield. While Arrowhead have stated there are still no plans for cross-progression despite constant requests from the community, the good news is that Arrowhead are looking to “provide more challenge” for Helldivers 2 players that want a rougher experience.

Helldivers 2 devs are “looking for ways to provide more challenge”

One of the constant banes for Helldivers 2 pertains to game difficulty and challenges provided by enemies. There was a lot of flack for The Leviathan before they were nerfed, but Arrowhead admitted that this was “bulls*** game design” that they must learn from for the future.

While players were happy for The Leviathan to receive heavy nerfs, there is a feeling that the game is too easy. There are numerous threads on Reddit, and complaints about the lack of difficulty have been raised on Discord.

As spotted by Gamesradar, on the Helldivers Discord, a user submitted a question to community manager, Baskinator, asking “Is there a plan for any higher difficulties or for upgraded enemy types on higher difficulties?”.

The user explained that “currently there are a lot of enemies that don’t really feel like they’re actually heavy enemies as much as they are AT taxes”. They also stated that a lot of enemies “feel rather unthreatening,” such as the recently circumcised Leviathan, because “the majority of the threat of the leviathan was its ragdoll but after that was removed they don’t really have any effect on the player outside of the occasional 1 tap”.

While unable to reveal the developer’s plans for obvious reasons, Baskinator at least confirmed in their response that Arrowhead “are looking for ways to provide more challenge to players”. There are no hints as to how greater difficulty could be implemented, but at least it’s something Arrowhead are working on.

In addition to Baskinator, QA lead Jojo was asked about difficulty concerning specifically The Leviathan. The QA lead was asked, “Do you feel Leviathan are in a good place? They kind of seem like background noise at the moment imo. Sky candy presenting no real threat”. To this, Jojo responded, “Not my call but I think it’s in a decent spot for now. Any changes would probably need to be more involved and take longer”.

We don’t know when “more challenge” will be provided, but hopefully it comes in the time for the late-August release on Xbox consoles. We also don’t know when the next update will be released, but Arrowhead has confirmed it should include a fix for the game’s most infuriating bug that has been around for at least over a month.
