Helldivers 2 is one of the most successful and popular games of the year. As a multiplayer game, it’s only natural that some fans have fantasized about the possibilities of crossovers with other famous IPs. Regarding the want from some fans, the Helldivers 2 developer has discussed crossover ideas like Star Wars while comparing the game’s differences to Fortnite.
Arrowhead recently released a new update for the game, and the Helldivers 2 01.000.203 patch notes provide a list of fixes still in the works. The dev has also revealed to the community an in-development nerf that will stop players ‘dying in 2 secs,’ and the CEO has officially confirmed that the game is not getting a customization feature fans desperately want.
While the above are other recent examples of the developer communicating with fans, Arrowhead’s community manager has also discussed the possibility of crossovers like Star Wars. In discussing this possibility, there is a clear insistence that Arrowhead will not turn HD2 into Fortnite.
Helldivers 2 dev discusses crossover possibilities
Helldivers 2 community manager, Twinbeard, has responded to the possibility of crossovers. This response comes courtesy of the game’s official Discord that fans can join to provide feedback and interact with the devs.
In addressing whether the game is looking to collaborate with other famous IPs, the Arrowhead community manager said ‘crossovers have to make sense’. For example, ‘Melee weapons could be plausible in Helldivers [but] Lightsabers from SW would not’.
This doesn’t mean all potential crossovers are a no-go. As mentioned by Twinbeard, ‘A helldiver finding a remnant, artefact or a letter from someone from another game/cultural universe is plausible’. While that is a plausible example, ‘Mickey Mouse writing a helldiver would not’ be plausible.
Again, there’s an insistence that crossovers have to make sense as Helldivers 2 does not want to be Kingdom Hearts or Fortnite. There’s nothing wrong with either Fortnite or Kingdom Hearts as they’re both fantastic games where Disney crossovers make sense to their lore and world.
But, for Arrowhead, if they are going to do a crossover, they want it to ‘make sense and fit in’ whether it’s just a ‘feelgood, fun, [or] a memory’.
This response has primarily stemmed from Epic confirming a release date for another Fortnite x Star Wars collaboration. It’s good to hear that crossovers are not completely off the table for Helldivers 2, and it’s also good news that any collab would be taken seriously in regard to whether it suits HD2.
