There has been a lot of uncertainty within the Helldivers 2 community over the past few days following Sony’s announcement that all players would need to link a PSN account to Steam to keep playing. Thankfully, this requirement has been backtracked and won’t be going ahead following the massive backlash from the community which included Helldivers 2 becoming the most negatively reviewed paid game on Steam.

However, the saga isn’t over yet, as players in over 170 countries are still unable to play the game. As players wonder what is next for Helldivers 2, one of the Community Managers for the game provides an update on the situation.

Twinbeard, one of the Helldivers 2 Community Managers, posted an update on the official Discord server stating that there is no new information regarding players outside of the PSN regions in regards to account linking saying,

“Ideally, we would’ve liked to have some more information before posting an announcement here. However, as questions about the details surrounding account linking keep pouring in, and understandably so, we feel it’s better to say something, even if it’s not much.

We don’t have any updated information about the account linking yet, particularly of anything related to players outside PSN regions. To clarify and per Sony’s earlier statement, mandatory account linking will not be going forward. There are still ongoing discussions between parties about the details and we at Arrowhead acknowledge and respect that it will take some time to sort those out. We therefore kindly ask of you, our cherished community, hardcore helldivers and precious players, to try to be patient as well. As soon as we learn more we’ll post an update here.”

The good news is that the decision to not go forward with mandatory account linking is still in effect. However, it looks like there will still be some time before players outside of PSN regions will be able to purchase the game again following its removal from Steam in over 170 countries. It is also unclear whether optional account linking will be available or whether the entire feature will be scrapped from the game. Even though there is not much new information given in this announcement, the biggest takeaway is that Sony hasn’t gone back on yesterday’s statement now that the dust has begun to settle.

Although it looks like the fight hasn’t ended yet and it won’t be until all players can resume Helldiving, players have begun to come back to the game, with Helldivers 2 seeing the highest concurrent players so far this month following Sony’s backtrack. This is great news as the Terminids are becoming a “greater threat than ever before” so it is all hands on deck.
