David Polfeldt, former managing director of Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, will not be returning to the publisher following his six month sabbatical.

That’s according to a profile published over the weekend in the Hit Points newsletter (as spotted by Video Games Chronicle.). Polfeldt had originally announced he would be departing from the studio back in June. However, at the time he said he’d take six months sabbatical, and would return in a new role at Ubisoft.

The profile reportedly reveals that Polfeldt has now chosen not to return to Ubisoft. Instead, he’s apparently serving his six month notice and then will go “wherever the wind takes me”. Speaking to Hit Points author Nathan Brown, David Polfeldt indicated that the increasing size of the studio factored into his decision to depart the company he’d been at for 17 years. “I think my philosophy and my skills work well for a certain kind of group of a certain kind of size. I don’t think I’m the right manager for what the studio has become. I’m perfectly at peace with it.”

Ubisoft Massive certainly have a lot on their plate at the moment, which somewhat explains their expanding size. They’re currently hard at work on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a game based on the James Cameron movie series. They’re also busy working on the publisher’s Star Wars open world project and are the shepherds of The Division franchise.

We’ve not seen much from Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora lately, but we assume that may change in the coming months, as it’s expected to arrive on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC later this year.
