Ubisoft has published a new video showcasing the improvements to the Snowdrop engine for the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

In the video, the team at Massive Entertainment talk about how the engine, previously used in the urban-centric The Division games, had to take on a whole new challenge in the far more natural environment of Pandora. The engine’s micro-detail system allowed them to have incredibly highly detailed foliage, and process even more objects per frame.

The video also briefly touches upon other impressive technical feats, including intelligent plants and wind systems. That’s pretty important, as it seems you’ll be spending a lot of time in the air. As a result, the adventure will feature a  new volumetric cloud system to ensure the skies look extra pretty.

It also seems the Snowdrop’s tech magic doesn’t stop at visual treats. For example, NPCs will even understand the state of the world, even as Pandora changes as a result of your actions as you progress through the game.
