The Diablo 4 community is doggedly determined to prove that yes, actually, there is a Diablo 4 cow level despite the developers repeatedly denying that such an area exists.

An impressive thread on the official Diablo subreddit by Altnob has detailed some of the community’s hunt so far, which began when players found a secret quest that would open a mysterious portal to a red tinged level – just as the fabled location from Diablo 2 once did. While following the steps didn’t offer them what they were looking for and only granted them an achievement, many are convinced it’s just the first step needed in a chain that they’ll need to do to find that level.

Altnob found out that there’s an altar found near Hell with the Prime Evil skulls of Mephisto, Baal and Diablo, which you can cheer in front of to open the portal. From here is where players have been scouring the game and datamines to find more information. For example, a fountain in Ked Bardu includes a tablet surrounded by oxen which appears to be a part of a puzzle, asking for “one who presents a worthy offering cleansed in these waters may gain their blessing.”

Another user by the name of Frogbound went into the game and found a list of all the cow spawns around the world – finding out some info like the fact cows seem to spawn in groups of three, and that there’s one place on the map that seems to have 6 cows. Other users, such as Urquanlord88, have found that there are some locations such as the Fractured Peaks with no cows at all.

There’s a mixture of incredulity and impressiveness at the work that’s so far gone into these cow-spiracy theories, with many other users trying to put forward their own theories. “Why do I get a feeling a clue might involve the fields of hatred in some way?” asks Azuregore. Others still are also posting their own finds in the game – “Not sure if it’s related,” starts Enconhun, “But at a blacksmith (Edit: in Zarbinzet) when you click on the anvil your character tries to pick it up but can’t because overburdened. Maybe related to this?”

Of course, some are skeptical that they’ll find anything – with some positing that perhaps a different farmyard animal has a secret level, such as a chicken. (Mainly thanks to one of the game’s many promos with KFC) and there’s always the familiar refrain of “There is no cow level” – but it’s always fun to see the community rallying around to uncover all the secrets that are in – and sure to be added to – Diablo 4 over the coming weeks and months with every update.

As to whether we’ll actually see Blizzard add a secret cow level to the game in the future? Well, in this writer’s opinion the community just needs some bovine intervention.
