The MW2 Blackcell battle pass offering has quickly become one of the most heavily debated features of the game’s third season. Some fans are celebrating the addition of more cosmetics and items through the new premium track. However, other players are calling its inclusion a desperate tactic by the developers to “squeeze every last penny out of a dying game.”

Though there are plenty of other widely accepted introductions in Season 3, such as the return of Gunfight and the integration of new anti-cheat mechanisms, the Blackcell premium BP offering is certainly not one of them. One particularly concerned Reddit user has even called it “an extremely alarming inclusion in the current state of the game.”

In a post shared through the CoDWarzone subreddit, the same individual would go on to say that not being able to use CoD points to purchase Blackcell “is clearly a sign that Activision’s CP reward system through the general battle pass is failing.” With Activision now attempting to get everyone else to pay real money just to access Blackcell, this seemingly indicates that “they just don’t have enough players to play the volume game anymore.”

This drastic decrease in MW2’s player count has become even more apparent in the past few months after having dropped below 90,000 for the first time since launch. Warzone 2 also isn’t faring any better as both streamers and viewers have seemingly become tired of the battle royale as its Twitch numbers continue to reach an all-time low.

Now that the Blackcell battle pass is available with the arrival of MW2 Season 3, many players are calling on others to think before they purchase. “The potential success of Blackcell will prove to be a positive business case for companies to keep gouging the customer to gain short term revenue instead of fixing their game to encourage player growth,” said the post creator.

Whether or not this convincing argument resonates with the rest of player base remains to be seen. But with a new 2023 CoD installment set to drop soon, you may indeed be better off saving your money and waiting for the new game to be released.
