The next installment in the Call of Duty series is on the cusp of coming out. It’s a remake of Modern Warfare 3, and fans are divided over whether it’s worth the full price of admission. Many believe it is nothing more than glorified DLC for Modern Warfare 2, meanwhile, one Call of Duty fan has used a classic SpongeBob meme to prove MW3 is not DLC and is instead a worthy standalone game.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t launch until November, but fans were recently able to enjoy its multiplayer through beta weekends. The reception to these betas was mixed with fans begging Activision to better balance guns before launch, while also agreeing that Estate is the worst multiplayer map. Not to mention some of the CoD community have started cancelling their MW3 pre-orders following the completion of the historic Microsoft and Activision deal.

Away from just the quality of the game, some argue Modern Warfare 3 is equivalent to DLC and not worth buying for £69.99. Whether it’s worth buying or not is subjective, yet one Call of Duty fan has stood up for Activision and fanned the flames online through the power of SpongeBob.

Call of Duty fan proves MW3 is not MW2 DLC pass

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has received criticism from fans online saying it is MW2 DLC being sold at the full price of a new game. It’s easy to understand why disgruntled fans believe this as MW3 was reportedly morphed from an MW2 extension into a full premium release. Activision has reiterated several times that Modern Warfare 3 is a premium standalone entry, but members of the community remain unconvinced it’s justified.

Still, there are fans willing to price. Reddit user midasrockstar argues Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 ‘is literally everything the new game should have, and has everything people asked to be fixed’. This Reddit post uses the classic SpongeBob meme originating from the season 3 episode, Rock-a-Bye Bivalve. This meme rebukes the $70 DLC pass skepticism by pointing out all of the new content and fixes:

  • New campaign
  •  New Warzone map
  •  Lots of new guns
  •  New mastery camos for those guns
  •  Return of old movement
  •  Return of zombies
  •  Remastered Terminal
  •  Rust
  •  Longer TKK
  •  Carry forward

Alas, not everyone is buying into the argument. Some believe it’s time for ‘CoD to go Free to play with how predatory their microtransactions are,’ and that it should be free-to-play on one client just like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Another commenter pointed out that the new Warzone map, guns, camos, and movement come free with Warzone making MW3 worthless. Another commenter said everything about the MW3 is worse than MW2, but they’re a sucker buying the game because of the 16 old-school MW2 maps.

Ultimately, you need to decide yourself whether Modern Warfare 3 is worth buying at full price. It does come with a unique blockbuster campaign and zombies, but that may not be enough to justify £69.99/$69.99. Worse yet, £99.99/$99.99 if you want the uber-expensive Vault edition.

The release date for Modern Warfare 3 is November 10th with early access to the campaign available from November 2nd. Friendly reminder that none of your beta progress carries over to the full release.
