Even so with a new expansion comes new opportunities but before we discuss there is one quick thing to mention. If you like one Hunter spec above the others then play that spec, you’ll perform significantly better and more importantly enjoy the game much more on a spec you are comfortable with and enjoy than one that is slightly better performance wise when optimized.

Marksmanship
Marksmanship is very similar to how it plays in Shadowlands, there has been a few changes and interesting talents added such as Salvo and an interesting choice node after Marksmanship’s main damage cooldown Trueshot allowing you to have a shorter cooldown or a more powerful cooldown.

Currently we don’t know exactly where Marksmanship will land compared to other specs but some early testing suggests it may be slightly behind where we would like and expect it to be. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the class be buffed early in season 1 because of this and then Marksmanship will really shine.

Beast Mastery
Beast Mastery is doing what Beast Mastery does best. Super consistent damage, entirely on the move. The only ranged spec in the game which loses practically nothing from movement. Evoker are a close second but with their reduced range the Beast Mastery Hunter is still the go to for anyone looking for absolute freedom when it comes to movement.

The Beast Mastery Hunter has seen a steady rise since pre patch and with the release of Dragonflight have gained even more favor for their ability to deal with situations on the move.
Survival
Survival has had its ups and downs over the years and is recently coming off and incredible high with the end of Shadowlands where it was one of the most powerful specs in mythic + and even saw a good amount of play within the raid itself.

With Dragonflight however Survival lost its tier set bonus which was propping up a lot of its damage. You’ll notice a significant switch in playstyles from bombs with the old tier set to a more melee focused build. With this it has lost a lot of power and is currently in need of help from Blizzard if it’s going to be seeing any major play.

Summary
To summarize Beast Mastery is the clear outlier ahead. While lacking some of the burst of Marksmanship it is overall doing more damage all while completely mobile where Marksmanship has to plant itself for those big aim shots.
As we mentioned however if you do enjoy 1 specs significantly more than the others then you’ll do absolutely fine. Besides raiding in a top 100 guild or participating in the MDI every spec is capable of clearing the content. This is afterall a new expansion and tuning could change at any moment!
