It’s the dawn of a new era for Rockstar Games’ zany crime-filled series, so after the novelty of the GTA 6 announcement wore off, you may, at some point, have wondered: Will GTA 5 shut down? If you’re worried about the impending status of the fifth mainline installment, there’s no need to worry; we’ll be covering what you need to know here to prepare you beforehand.

Now that the GTA 6 release date window has been established, updates to GTA 5 and its massively popular online mode will likely begin dwindling. But does that mean Rockstar will shut down the game’s servers completely? Keep reading to find out what we know.

Will GTA 5 and GTA Online shut down?

No, we don’t expect Rockstar Games to completely shut down its GTA 5 and GTA Online servers, even when GTA 6 gets released. Though updates likely won’t be as regular as in its heyday, the ongoing relevance of the fifth mainline entry’s online mode remains a massive boon for the developers that would make simply throwing it away a gigantic waste. Instead, look for Rockstar to gradually focus on improving GTA 6’s online mode while still maintaining GTA 5’s online servers periodically.

Of course, since this has yet to be confirmed by the Grand Theft Auto devs themselves, you will need to take it with a generous helping of salt, as always. But you likely won’t have to remain patient too long for actual confirmation, as Rockstar Games should be providing more details on the online presence of GTA 6 and its predecessor the closer we get to the former’s launch.
