  • Rockstar has confirmed the GTA 6 release date window for Fall 2025.
  • We know the game will come to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar Games has officially revealed a GTA 6 release date window, locking in when we might expect to see the next Grand Theft Auto game. Seemingly tired of re-releasing GTA 5 over and over again, it has been over a decade since we’ve seen something new about a mainline GTA game, but that drought is finally over. Suffice it to say, the Grand Theft Auto 6 release date has bee a long time coming. Let’s take a look at the GTA 6 release date window, news, rumours, and everything else we know about it.

GTA 6 release date window

The GTA 6 release date is confirmed for Fall 2025. Take-Two Interactive confirmed this release window during its final quarterly earnings call for 2024, which took place in May 2025. A trailer for the game also confirms this release window. Before this earnings call and the trailer, the only date we had for a potential release was 2025. Rockstar also confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms first.

More details about the release date window were confirmed by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick during an interview with CNBC. During the interview, Zelnick said the release date window was decided taking into account bugs and meeting the “extraordinary expectations” people have for the game. Regarding the release window, he went on to say the company has “narrowed the timing because we are highly confident in that timing”.

There is nothing concrete about the PC release, other than we assume it will likely come out sometime after the console launch. As per Take-Two’s press release, there is a statement from Rockstar Games founder, Sam Houser, who says: “Grand Theft Auto 6 continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences. We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere”.

In the earnings call, the company remarked: “As we approach our expected significant inflexion point in fiscal 2025, our teams continue to make excellent progress advancing our development pipeline and capitalising on our revenue-driven opportunities and synergies”. At the time of writing, we don’t know anything else about the game’s release. There has been no word revealing a more specific launch date and we will have to wait. However, they will likely provide more details the closer we get to 2025.

GTA 6 location and gameplay

At the time of writing, there isn’t a ton of information about the game’s finer details. Obviously, we know that GTA 6 will be an open-world game and take us to the “state of Leonida, home of the neon-soaked streets of Vice City”. We can see from the trailers that it also takes place in modern-day Vice City, as opposed to an earlier period. As per the press release, GTA 6 will be the “biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet”.

GTA 6 news

While there hasn’t been anything brand new about Grand Theft Auto VI since the announcement trailer, there have been no more leaks taking place either. It seems now the release date window has been locked in, we probably won’t hear much until we approach 2025. The first official trailer is sure to be one of many more to come next year. Speaking of the infamous leaks, Rockstar Games had initially planned to debut its highly-anticipated first trailer for GTA 6 on December 5, 2023, but was foiled when someone leaked a ton of early footage of the game. In response, Rockstar published the trailer early.

Despite the major setback of leaked game footage, Rockstar released a statement to clarify that while it is “extremely disappointed” that early development footage has leaked, work on “the next Grand Theft Auto will continue as planned”. The developers also assure fans that they “will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready”.

GTA 6 story

We’ve seen in the announcement trailer that the game will feature two main protagonists, Lucia and Jason. These two might be involved in a love affair in some quasi-modern-day Bonnie and Clyde situation. For what it’s worth, Lucia is the first female protagonist in the GTA franchise since the days of the top-down games. For now, we will need to wait for more information about how these two protagonists will interact and play out, perhaps it will be similar to how you switched PoVs in GTA 5.

The trailer, aside from revitalising a love for Tom Petty, shows off what many expected to be a parody of Miami, where social media influencers on the streets are as common as alligators. From what we know, the story is going to follow Jason and Lucia. We see in the trailer that Lucia is wearing an orange jumpsuit, clearly indicating she is in prison. Whether or not this is how the game starts or ends, remains to be seen. Jason, on the other hand, was given a minor role in the trailer. There are hints that the two are romantically involved, but this is only something we will get clarity on as we get more details.

GTA 6 rumors and leaks

Aside from the big gameplay leak that took place in December 2023, we haven’t seen anything new leaked about the next entry in the GTA series. The game is currently in active development, so it isn’t outside the realm of possibility to assume more leaks might occur. In terms of rumours, there is hefty speculation that a second GTA 6 trailer will be released between May and August, which, let’s be honest, seems fairly broad and unspecific. While entirely speculation, Twitter user SynthPotato claims this trailer prediction is likely based on how Rockstar has handled the marketing of previous games. Given how plenty of game announcements and updates happen throughout summer, it is likely we could hear something about GTA 6 in some form.
