Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 – or GTA 6 for short – may be one of the most anticipated games of all time and one of the biggest questions on everyone’s lips is almost certainly when is the GTA 6 release date?

It’s been over a decade since the previous entry in the series, and expectations of the next entry in the crime sim are higher than ever, with every morsel of news on the follow-up to GTA V devoured by hungry gamers. Now, the hype has gone up to eleven, as Rockstar have dropped the first trailer and officially started the hype train to Grand Theft Auto 6’s release.

Naturally then, we’ve been hard at work grabbing what morsels of information we can, and we’ll keep this guide up to date with everything we do know so far.

GTA 6 release date window

Based on Rockstar Games’s recently released announcement trailer, the GTA 6 release date window will take place at some point in 2025. Unfortunately, the development team has yet to reveal a more specific launch date. However, they will likely provide more details the closer we get to opening day.

Previously, Take-Two’s Q1 2024 Earnings Conference Call, which took place in August, seemed to indicate that the game’s release would take place in 2024. After the developers released the reveal video early, however, fans are now in for an even longer wait, as there still appears to be plenty of polishing that needs to be done before GTA 6 can be launched.

In the presentation, the company remarked: “As we approach our expected significant inflection point in fiscal 2025, our teams continue to make excellent progress advancing our development pipeline and capitalising on our revenue-driven opportunities and synergies.”

Translating from corporate-speak, the company is saying it’s expecting some sort of major financial event to take place in the financial year of 2025, which covers the period from April 1, 2024, through March 2025. We’d be hard-pressed to think of a more significant event that’d warrant that sort of heads-up than the launch of one of the most highly anticipated games of all time, so it’s a reasonable guess that it may be referring to Grand Theft Auto 6, even if it’s just a prediction at this point.

GTA 6 news and rumours – what we know so far

Rockstar Games had initially planned to debut its highly-anticipated launch trailer on December 5th at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM GMT. Unfortunately, one notorious data miner decided to throw a wrench into the studio’s plans with a frustratingly untimely crypto-themed leak, which prompted the devs to release the official trailer immediately afterward, a day earlier than expected. As of writing, it’s currently unclear when the next GTA 6 teaser will be launched.

We know GTA 6 is definitely coming, as Rockstar announced that the game was in development back in February of 2022, casually name-dropping the title in a blog post in an update to the community.

Of course, there was a high-profile GTA 6 leak following a breach by a hacker back in September of 2022 that seemed to reveal plenty more details than Rockstar was ready to let on. While the dust has largely settled from a legal standpoint, it’s fair to say that much of the content that made its way to the public will now be outdated, changed, or completely scrapped, so it’s hard to use any of it as an indicator of what the new game will entail.

Once Rockstar are ready to show off more and detail what to expect in the game, however, we will, of course, update as soon as we’re able. For now, take a look at the GTA 6 reveal trailer theory, GTA 6 side activity fan requests, and our comprehensive GTA 6 iceberg page so you can learn more while you wait.
