Good news for those masochistic Resi fans out there, the Professional difficulty setting makes a welcome return in Resident Evil 4 Remake, ramping the game’s already challenging action survival to even more testing heights. However, loading up the game for the first time and diving into the main story only gives players the option of Assisted, Standard, or Hardcore difficulty levels.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to unlock Professional Mode in Resident Evil 4 Remake. The unlock requirements are exactly the same as in the original 2005 version but may not be immediately obvious to those sampling Resident Evil 4 for the first time or those who haven’t picked up the game in a few years.

How to Unlock Professional Mode in Resident Evil 4

To unlock Professional Mode in Resident Evil 4 Remake, you’ll need to beat the game on any of the existing difficulty levels. From there, you can fire up a new game and have the option to select Professional among the difficulty options.

Do note that once you’ve committed to Professional Mode, there’s no way to backtrack and switch to a lower difficulty setting. Go Professional, and you’re in for the long haul.

What Changes in Professional Mode?

Professional Mode changes several critical aspects of the game, but the overall theme is cranking up the challenge for players. This comes in the shape of more durable enemies that not only sponge more damage but are far more lethal to Leon. Elsewhere, prices at the merchant are higher, auto-saves are disabled, and pulling off parries is much more difficult.
