Can You Rename Your Pokemon?
Before Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you had to visit an official NPC in the previous games called the Name Rater, who could rate and rename Pokemon Nicknames. However, the days of visiting Name Raters to change Nicknames are long gone now. You can now go through some simple steps to rename your Pokemon.

It’s odd for Pokemon Trainers to rely on a single NPC to change their Pokemon’s nicknames when they own the Pokemon themselves. Therefore, with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the concept of Name Raters has been completely discarded.
With this revamp, you can now change your Pokemon’s Nicknames wherever you are in Paldea without visiting those annoying NPCs.
How To Rename Your Pokemons
Changing your Pokemon’s Nicknames now has never been easier; here’s how you can do it:
- Start by pressing the X Button, and the Menu will pop up.
- Navigate to the Pokemon whose nickname you want to change on the left side of the screen and press the A button.
- Now, select Check Summary, and you’ll be taken to another page.
- Once the page is brought up, press the X Button to change the Nickname.
- Once you’re done with it, press the (+) Button to save your changes.
Now that you know the steps, you keep renaming your Pokemon to whatever goofy name you come up with. Though, it is worth noting that these steps will only apply to Pokemon that are currently in your active party and not to those that are in your box. To change the names of the boxed Pokemons, you’ll need to move them out of the box and into your active party, then follow through the previously mentioned steps.

Note: There’s no limit to what you’re going to name your Pokemon, but inappropriate Nicknames are still banned. Such words are also banned when you’re asked to input your name during the character selection phase.

Restrictions In Renaming Your Pokemon
Along with the box limitation, there are a few other restrictions as well. We’ve listed them below:
- You can’t rename a Pokemon you receive from trading that already has a Nickname.
- Pokemon you receive from trading without a Nickname can be given a Nickname, but only once.
- Any Pokemon that you get from Mystery Gifts can’t be given Nicknames.
It is also worth noting that the trade restriction applies to both Link Trades and Surprise Trades. And as the name suggests, there’s a higher risk of receiving a Pokemon with a Nickname from Surprise Trades, as you won’t really know what Pokemon you’ll receive. Though it is good riddance for those Pokemon that you don’t really need.

Can You Remove Nicknames?
Sadly, the game won’t let you remove Nicknames that you’ve assigned to your Pokemon. However, what you can do is rename your Pokemon to its original name. Moreover, every time your Pokemon evolves, you can rename it, as there are no such limitations except when it comes to Trading and Pokemon received from Mystery Gifts.
Final Thoughts
This is everything that you need to know about renaming your Pokemon. From typo mistakes to creating new, better monikers for your furry companions, the removal of Name Raters has made the life of every Trainer easier.
