With the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Game Freak is finally switching things up from the tried and true pattern they’ve used for the previous Pokemon games. They have decided to forego the linear structure of their prior releases in favor of a more flexible open world sort of gameplay for this installment in the series. Even the official Pokémon website makes mention of the fact that Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are the first open-world role-playing games in the Pokémon franchise.

Fans have been clamoring for an open world game for quite some time at this point. In addition to that, it was one of the primary criticisms leveled at the prior core game, Pokemon Sword and Shield. Many players felt that the game did not have a really open world. Despite the fact that it included a small region in the middle of its map called “Wild Area” which featured some elements of an open world, fans still did not deem it as enough.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Open World

It should not come as a surprise that they are now including an open world design into their game because the gameplay of Pokemon Legends Arceus, which was the last Pokemon title released before Scarlet and Violet, was the closest we’ve ever gotten to an open world Pokemon game so far.

Despite this open world structure, the game will still maintain the traditional gameplay of fighting your way through a number of gym leaders in order to reach and challenge this region’s Elite Four. It is currently unknown how this may impact the gameplay. It is anticipated that there will still be a total of eight gym leaders to fight, as this has been the case for every Pokemon game so far.

The linear gameplay of past Pokemon games prevented players from accessing high-level locations that they normally would not be able to beat, which has led fans to speculate about the means by which players will be required to advance in the game. It’s possible that gym leaders will use teams that get progressively more challenging depending on the number of gym badges you already have. However, those are only guesses for now.

Legendaries In The Open World

Players have a lot to look forward to with Paldea’s vast world, with one of those being the fact that exploring throughout Paldea will be aided by Koraidon and Miraidon, the two legendary Pokemon that are the mascots of Scarlet and Violet, respectively.

Both of these legendary Pokemon are capable of transforming into vehicles that are maneuverable in any environment, be it on land, in the sea, or in the air. Because of their excellent mobility, they are also able to scale steep cliffs with relative ease.

Paldea’s open world will surely leave a memorable mark on players with its wonderful landscapes and fresh gameplay.
