As we’ve seen, several things have changed between the original PoE and Path of Exile 2. Among them is the way you fund your auras, minions, and other persistent effects. Before, you would have to reserve a certain portion of your life or mana to use those effects. Essentially, “locking off” those amounts from being used. In PoE2, the new stat, Spirit, governs these semi-passive abilities. So, if your build relies on using them, you would want to get more Spirit. We’ll explain everything you need to know about getting and using Spirit in Path of Exile 2.
How to increase Spirit in PoE2?
Spirit isn’t an abundant resource in Path of Exile 2. You can get it from certain gear, most notably from Sceptres and some of its affixes, as well as from Campaign rewards. That will make managing your Spirit reserves a challenging task, especially if you want to run many minions and/or auras simultaneously.
Unfortunately, you can’t dual-wield two Sceptres to double your Spirit reserves.
Basic Sceptres will give you 100 Spirit and can roll affixes, through crafting for example, that increase that number by a certain percentage. Meanwhile, you should hunt down and kill certain enemies during the campaign to get permanent Spirit bonuses. They usually drop Uncut Spirit Gems as well. Refer to the table below for which enemies to find to increase your Spirit reserves:
Boss | Act | Location | Reward |
---|---|---|---|
King in the Mist | Act 1 | Freythorn | +30 Spirit |
Ignagduk, the Bog Witch | Act 3 | The Azak Bog | +30 Spirit |
Ignagduk, the Bog Witch | Act 3 Cruel | The Azak Bog | +40 Spirit |
This means that you’ll get an extra 100 Spirit by killing these enemies and consuming their dropped bonus items. Adding gear into the mix, you can have a decent amount of Spirit to power your passive Spirit abilities.
In the case of Scepters, some of them come with a minion skill attached, such as Skeleton Warriors. These summons won’t use your Spirit pool and instead work as a separate “free” skill.
What is Spirit used for?
As mentioned, Spirit replaces the old life and mana reservation systems. In short, you can use your Spirit pool to activate the following:
- Buffs
- Auras
- Permanent Minions
- Meta Gems
An example of activated buffs includes skills that modify your attacks or defensive stats, like extra Armour or Fire damage with each strike for Warrior. Unlike auras, these buffs are for your character only. Meanwhile, auras will be always active and extend to anyone else in your party or to your minions, if you have them. Permanent Minions, such as the Witch’s skeletons, use Spirit to remain active. Note that temporary minions don’t need Spirit to function – for example, Bone Constructs spawned from Unearth. Lastly, Meta Gems need Spirit to activate with another linked Skill Gem.
