Though you can survive well enough with melee weapons and the starting crossbow against standard mobs, you’ll need guns to take on the bigger and meaner bosses in Once Human. Firearms pump out substantially more damage at a higher rate so are a must have if you’re serious about taking on these hulking Stardust monstrosities.

Because the game has quite a few systems, resources, gear, and mechanics to understand and keep track of, knowing how to craft guns isn’t all that obvious. The game eventually leads you to crafting your first gun as part of the main story quest, but we’ll walk you through how to craft guns if you want a head start.

Crafting guns

Before you can craft guns, you’ll first need to progress through The Eve of Evolution tutorial quest until you establish your first Territory base and gain access to the Memetics menu. From there, open up the Cradle and then Memetics, navigate to the Crafting tab then unlock the Essential Tools, Gear Workbench, and Ammunition I skills by spending Meme points. These are the skills needed to make guns. Build a Gear Workbench then interact with it to bring up the gun crafting menu.

Here, you’ll see a list of all the gun blueprints you currently have, broken down into gun types – pistol, shotgun, SMG, rifle, sniper, crossbow, and so on. Click on the gun you want to craft to bring up a small window detailing the gun’s stats and the crafting materials required. On the right, you’ll see a column with different tiers – I to V. The higher the tier the better the gun’s stats, and therefore damage output, but you’ll need more exotic resources to craft them.

Note that you’ll need to click on the + signs and craft the individual components of the gun (typically either 3 or 4 parts) before you can craft the whole thing. Otherwise, you’ll see the ‘Insufficient materials’ message underneath. By way of an example, let’s take the tier I DE 50 pistol. It has the following components and crafting material requirements:

  • Pistol Frame I – x6 Waste Plastic, x4 Adhesive
  • Recoil Action I – x2 Copper Ingot, x6 Rusted Parts
  • Pistol Slide I – x1 Copper Ingot, x3 Waste Plastic

Craft each of these individual components by clicking on them and pressing F. Once you’ve made all three, hold F to confirm and craft the full DE 50 pistol, which will go into your inventory once the crafting process is complete. Note that guns also cost Energy Link to produce, but this is an abundant resource so shouldn’t be an issue.

How to craft different types of weapons

The steps above will only get you access to a basic pistol. To get more advanced weaponry, you’ll need to spend Meme Points in the Memetics menu on the following skills:

  • Gear Workbench – pistols, melee weapons
  • Basic Gear – SMGs, shotguns, rifles
  • Long-Range Firepower – snipers, LMGs
  • Rocket Launchers – rocket launchers (clue is in the name)

Beyond these basic versions of each gun type, you’ll need to find weapon blueprints to craft better versions. These are obtained for playing through quests, completing POI and settlement objectives, looting gear and weapon crates, using the Wish Machine, and defeating bosses. To see the requirements for a specific blueprint, bring up your inventory by tapping I on your keyboard, then go to the Blueprints tab at the top. Here, you’ll see a list of all blueprints. If you hover over one, you’ll get a short blurb under ‘How to get’ giving you hints on how to find the blueprint.
