Here’s everything you need to know about unlocking and beating Crimson Glow Valstrax in Monster Hunter Rise.

How to Unlock Crimson Glow Valstrax

Unlocking Crimson Glow Valstrax will be almost as challenging as the fight itself. You can face the beast through multiple quests, each having different unlock conditions.

Master Rank Quests

To unlock these quests, you must first defeat Furious Rajang at Master Rank 50 and then reach Master Rank 70 in the Sunbreak expansion. This will unlock the Urgent Quest Star at Worlds End, allowing you to face off against the powerful MR Crimson Glow Valstrax.

Once you’ve completed the Urgent Quest, you’ll be able to challenge MR Crimson Glow Valstrax in the Urgent Quest Star at Worlds End, and afterwards in the following quests in the Master Rank 6 Quest Pool:

  • Event Quest: M★6 Destructive Stars
  • Hub Quest: M★6 Hail to the Fierce
  • Hub Quest: M★6 Mysterious Glow
  • Support Survey: M★6 Operation Jungle Comet

Hunter Rank Quests

Crimson Glow Valstrax is a post-game monster, so for these quests, you’ll have to clear the Narwa the Allmother hunt first. This will allow you to reach Hunter Rank 100, after which Master Hojo will give you the urgent quest titled The Crimson Glow. This quest takes place in the Shrine Ruins, with other monsters in the area being Mizutsune and Bazelgeuse.

There is also an event quest in the Hub titled “Advanced: Crimson Calamity“, which allows you to fight Valstrax before reaching HR 100. However, the Valstrax in this quest is much stronger, so it is not recommended to attempt this before the other.

Other High Rank quests where you face the crimson beast are these:

  • Hub Quest: ★7 Advanced: The Fallen Comet
  • Hub Quest: ★7 The Evil Star from Beyond

How to Prepare for Crimson Glow Valstrax

In terms of weapons, consider using a weapon with good reach, like a lance, to attack Valstrax’s tail safely. Alternatively, use a heavy-hitting weapon like a hammer or greatsword to significantly damage its head and chest.

Elemental weapons, excluding dragon-type, are a good choice for this fight. Ranged players may have trouble due to Valstrax’s dangerous projectile and laser attacks, so a close-range coating is recommended for Bow players. It’s also important to check the weapons your Buddies use and adjust them as needed.

To combat Valstrax’s frequent Dragonblight affliction, it’s recommended to fit the Blight Resistance skill into your build and to increase your innate resistance to Dragon elemental damage. Skills that increase your evasion, such as Evade Extender and Evade Window, are also useful in this fight.

Tips on how to Fight Crimson Glow Valstrax

As previously mentioned, Crimson Glow Valstrax is an extremely challenging fight no matter which quests you battle him in. For this reason, you’ll need to know all aspects of the fight, especially when and where to slice the powerful dragon.

Crimson Glow Valstrax Attack Patterns

One of the key things to remember when fighting Crimson Glow Valstrax is its wings. Depending on the position of its wings, it will utilize a different moveset. When its wings are in their normal position, it tends to use close-range attacks. While its wings are slicked backward, however, it uses more ranged projectile attacks.

It is important to pay attention to the signs that Valstrax is about to use a dangerous attack. Look out for its charging behavior and wing positions, as these can indicate the type of attack it’s about to use.

One of its most dangerous attacks to watch out for in its projectile style is when it shoots a huge red beam. This attack has a long startup, so there’s a danger of getting trapped between its wings if you’re directly in front of it. Even in its normal stance, Valstrax’s wing stabs have a large hitbox, so it’s best to stand just behind its front legs to avoid getting hit.

When Valstrax is enraged, its wings will glow bright red, and several of its attacks will leave behind clouds of dragon energy that explode after a few seconds. Make sure to be mindful of your Wirefall, as it’s sometimes better to stay down instead of getting caught in Valstrax’s trap.

Plan of Attack against Crimson Glow Valstrax

Crimson Glow Valstrax has the highest hit zone values on its head, but attacking it there will make you an easy target for its wing stabs. Remember that Valstrax’s chest is the only weak point that changes, so be ready to adjust your strategy if needed. Instead, it’s safer to attack its tail, which is easily reachable, and Valstrax will have trouble hitting you without turning around.

When it is performing an energy charge through the reactor on its chest, Valstrax is at its most vulnerable. This is the best time to attack, as doing enough damage will cause the reactor to explode and topple the monster. Valstrax is equally weak to fire, thunder, ice, and water damage but is immune to dragon damage. It is also highly resistant to status effects, with the exception of Blast.

As in all fights, you should also try using the environment to your advantage. For example, the Shrine Ruins in The Crimson Glow provide a lot of vertical space to maneuver in, including walls and ledges to dodge toward and jump off of. Utilize the terrain to dodge Valstrax’s powerful attacks and create opportunities for counterattacks. Try to find a safe place to hide and heal if you need to. However, be mindful of the environment’s destructibility as well.

You can also rely on your minimap and the audio cues in the game to help you anticipate its moves. Stay alert, stay prepared, and don’t be afraid to take breaks if you’re getting overwhelmed. With the right preparation and just a little patience, beating Crimson Glow Valstrax is very possible.

Crimson Glow Valstrax is one of the toughest Monsters you’ll face while playing Monster Hunter Rise. You can face this beast in a number of High-Rank and Master-Rank quests, but slaying it is the toughest part. Still, if you follow our tips on preparation, understand its attack patterns, and have your own offensive plan, you’ll be able to beat the vicious elder dragon in no time.
