In the early hours of Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll come across numerous locked doors, barred by a Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 lock. With the riches taunting you, it isn’t immediately clear how to open locked doors in Hogwarts Legacy.
In this guide, we’ll explain exactly how to get through these doors. To open a locked door in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll need to learn the Alohomora spell, cast it on the door, and then successfully beat a short lockpick mini-game.

Learning Alohomora
To learn Alohomora, complete The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament main story quest. Gladwin Moon, the Hogwarts caretaker, asks for your help ridding Hogwarts of Demiguise statues by removing their Demiguise Moons.
To help you access the statues, Gladwin will teach you Alohomora. After completing the stealth mission that follows, you’ll be able to use Alohomora to unlock level 1 doors throughout Hogwarts and the countryside beyond.
To unlock Level 2 and Level 3 doors, you’ll need to gather more Demiguise Moons and return them to Gladwin Moon, who will then teach you more powerful variants of the spell – Alohomora 2 and Alohomora 3. This is part of The Man Behind The Moons side quest. These can unlock Level 2 and Level 3 doors.

How to Open Locked Doors in Hogwarts Legacy
To open locked doors in Hogwarts Legacy, approach the door and interact to cast Alohomora (Square on PlayStation 5). Doing so starts a lockpicking minigame. Hogwarts Legacy offers relatively brief and not particularly helpful instructions on how to play. Here’s a breakdown of how the minigame works.
You control two sparks – a green spark with the left thumbstick which moves the lock’s outer dial, and a red spark with the right thumbstick that rotates the inner dial. The key is to move the gears to the right spots and hold them there briefly to release the lock.
Unlocking doors is easier said than done. We recommend starting with the outer green spark. Push the left thumbstick all the way to the left or right. Slowly rotate it around in a circular motion (clockwise or anti-clockwise) until you find the spot where the mechanism in the bottom right of the lock starts moving and turns green. Hold it there.
Then do the same for the red inner spark using the right thumbstick until the mechanism at the lock’s center starts jittering and turning red. Hold both thumbsticks until the lock releases.

To open locked doors in Hogwarts Legacy, cast the Alohomora spell and solve the lockpicking minigame. The spell is unlocked during The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament quest. How Does Lock Picking Work in Hogwarts Legacy?
You control two gears with the left and right thumbsticks on your controller. Turn each in turn until their sparks – one green and one red – start to shine and their respective gear mechanics start to jerk and move.
