Final Fantasy XIV is an incredibly expansive experience, where players can choose from a number of different classes (called jobs in this game) for their characters. Lancers, monks, summoners, the opportunities are endless.
However, one job is the most appealing to a lot of players because of that job’s usage of enormous greatswords infused with dark magicks. We are, of course, talking about the Dark Knight job.

Below you’ll find everything you need to know about the black knight role, including how to unlock it, as well as what you can expect from it.
What is Dark Knight in Final Fantasy XIV
As mentioned above, Dark Knight is a class/job players can equip for their characters, much like the lancer and summoner jobs. Although this job is primarily a tank, it has extreme damage dealing potential, both physical as well as magical.

By using their towering greatswords, they’re able to deal incredible damage. More so when they infuse those greatswords with dark magicks. Of course, a job like this wouldn’t be complete without useful abilities, and dark knights have those in spades too. The types of abilities they’re most known for are those that drain the blood of their enemies. Morbid, we know.

However, none of what we mentioned above is the biggest reason players love this job. The biggest reason players go for this job is because of how cool this class’ armor looks. After all, who doesn’t like sleek and gothic themed aesthetics.
How to Unlock Dark Knight in Final Fantasy XIV
Unlock those jobs that are available for you to unlock from the get go, the Dark Knight class is one that players have to unlock by meeting specific set requirements. This is mostly due to the fact this job was introduced in the Final Fantasy XV Heavensword expansion, which brings us to our first requirement, having access to the Heavensword expansion of this game. (Which you can luckily get as part of the game’s infamous free trial)

After ensuring you have access to this expansion, there are a couple of other things you need to do, which include
- You have to be level 50 or above with any other disciples of war or mage.
- The city of Ishgard has to be unlocked and accessible (Which can be done so after completing all the mandatory main scenario quests in A Realm Reborn, including ‘Before the Dawn’ and ‘Head to Ishgard’.)
After meeting these requirements:
- Head to the city of Ishgard in the Coerthas region.
- Enter the zone called ‘The Pillars’.
- Look for an injured Elezian male NPC in this area and speak with him (The map coordinates should be X13-Y8).
By speaking with him, you’ll unlock a quest called ‘Our End’. Completing it will grant you, you guessed it, the Dark Knight job.
Final Thoughts
Seeing as how this job is unlocked rather late into the game, players don’t have to worry much about the job being under leveled, as the Dark Knight job has players begin from Level 30. Additionally, the level requirement of the other quests within the Dark Knight’s storyline increases at an interval of anywhere from 3 to 5 levels.
