Use the Grekhova as your sidearm, as its burst-fire potential can save your skin whenever you need to reload.
Best alternatives to AMES 85
AMES 85 is a good piece of hardware right out of the box, but if you’re not a fan, there are some similar guns that you could try. For instance, the AS VAL is further down the unlock track and is in many ways a direct upgrade to both this gun and the XM4. On the other hand, if you find the lack of close-range viability to be a problem, you should look into SMGs like the C9 and Jackal PDW, or a shotgun like Marine SP.
