Beating each chapter will reward you with a relic and a bit of lore to expand upon the story. The length of the chapters varies, especially when you consider how much side content is on offer in each one, but each chapter will likely take you roughly five to six hours to complete. That being said, some players could complete it much faster, while others who like to explore could spend longer.

So while the duration of each chapter might vary, they are similar lengths, for the most part, so it can still be a good method of tracking how far you are through the game. If you’ve completed the first three chapters, assuming you play the rest of the game at the same pace, it’s safe to say that you’re roughly halfway through the game. If you’re wondering how long the game is overall, we’ve got a separate guide to take you through that.

The game is largely influenced by Journey to the West, a Chinese story from 16th century following the exploits of Wukong, the Monkey King. As such, we can see where the title of “chapters” has come into play, by following the same literary inspiration. As a nod to the story, you can read the Journal in the game, which writes about different creatures and factions within the game.

The number of chapters is where the game and the novel split, contrasting our six chapters with the novel’s whopping 99. However, the reason there are six chapters in the game relates to the hint from the game’s prologue. The Destined One, our protagonist, is on the hunt for six relics which were said at the beginning to possess the power to strengthen Wukong against the Celestial Court. Therefore, each chapter of the game corresponds to one of the six relics.
