Black Myth: Wukong is a Souls-like and like many that fall into this most challenging of gens, it has its difficulties. If you’re looking to make sense of the game, whether that’s combat or exploration combat, we’ve pulled together a list of tips and tricks based on lessons learned the hard way during out time with Game Science’s freshman effort.

Don’t craft the starter head armour piece

As you play the game you’ll gradually unlock new armor sets. Part way through Chapter 1, you’ll unlock the ability to craft armor and you can craft a headpiece for a bonus 8 to your defense. However, straight after that is a boss that drops a ten-armour piece head armour item. It’s better to save the crafting resources since you’re limited early and use them on upcoming armour set.

Use Cloud Step to scout boss moves

Magic is an major part of Black Myth Wukong and spells play a big role in crit passive combos and light attack combos. However, spells also have other uses. When you get Cloudy Step towards the end of Chapter 1, you will use the spell to ignore enemy archer fire but also scout boss attack patterns. Feel Use the spell and watch how the boss’ combos work and chain. That way you can study the moves and then be better placed to pull of perfect dodges and find openings to deal damage.

Perfect Dodging and parrying

Parrying doesn’t feature in Black Myth Wukong. Instead, you have the Perfect Dodge. Perfect Dodges are timed dodges that happen when an attack is about to hit you. Most of the time, this grants stamina and Focus in return. You can get items that give mana back, for example, after perfect dodging three times in a row. There are other perfect dodge synergy buffs as you progress as well.

If you’re looking for a parry-type feature, you can build into one. The Immobilize spell has a perk that allows you to get an extended stun on a target as they are about to hit you. Cast the spell as the attack comes in and you’ll stun them for a slightly longer period of time.

Resting regenerates your Spirit resource

Spirits are a core part of your combat arsenal in Black Myth Wukong, allowing you to call on a fallen boss to dish out serious damage which grant a passive stat modifier, and an active skill. If you decide to change Spirit part way through your journey, you’ll have no resources for that Spirit. To recoup resources, rest at a shrine. It’s handy for when you’re farming an area and want something that counters a specific enemy type. Or, if you want to change your Spirit to try something new against a boss to get an advantage in the fight.

Relics are one-time buffs so choose wisely

Relics are connected with the main story line, but they also grant special powers and bonuses to. Each one has different effects. When you get your first one at the end of Chapter 1, you will get to see the system in play. Make sure to think about what build you want to play and how that works with your build before locking in your option.

Start Exploring

Chapter 1’s exploration is fairly limited, but you will find the odd optional boss and area wandering around. You are often rewarded for exploring. Mini-bosses tend to drop materials used for crafting items or even Spirits.Alternatively, you can find other items like Curios, Drink, Soaks, and other items and materials. You’ll even come across meditation spots, which grant Sparks. You’ll use Sparks to get perks and passives so you definitely want to find these when you can. Exploration and optional pathways are much more common in Chapter 2. There’s much more freedom to play the game how you want to and explore for tasty rewards.

Complete NPC quests

Completing NPC quests is a huge part of the game. Some will unlock new features, which are very important to progression and grant items and other rewards. The Wolf, for example, unlocks Celestial Medicines crafting. This serves as the game’s attribute system to help specialize your build. Missing this is a huge handicap for your progression. From Chapter 2 onward, you can complete NPC quests that give you a special Spirit for defeating a certain boss.
