Will Baldur’s Gate 3 get DLC or an expansion

At the moment, there is no confirmed DLC or expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios. In a conversation with IGN, Senior Product Manager Tom Butler noted that the team does want to do more future DLC. This conversation happened back at Gamescom 2023. “We’ll carry on patching for a while and then we’re all going to take a holiday and then we’ll figure out what we do next,” he said. “But at the moment, we genuinely have discussions. We want to do more. We don’t know what yet.”

In an interview with PC Gamer, Larian Founder Swen Vincke noted “Honestly, we haven’t started on an expansion.” He also mentioned that it would be hard to consider going all the way to level 20 as it enables some world-bending skills. Think Astral Projection and Power Word Kill. Wish is another such skill. “[Those] adventures require a different way of doing things, in terms of antagonists you’re going to have to deal with, which require a lot of development to do them properly.” In the realm of Dungeons & Dragons, there’s a lot in terms of development effort that would need to be considered.

What to expect from a BG3 expansion

One likely answer is present in where Baldur’s Gate 3 ends. Without getting into spoilers, the game involves Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells. Considering that this locale is deeply entrenched in D&D lore, a standalone expansion here sounds like a good idea. It could also account for all the various endings of the base game. However, this might force Larian Studios to start from scratch for a story that builds on the original storyline. The Archduchess of Avernus Zariel would be a formidable opponent or a sly ally.

As for new mechanics, there are a handful of D&D spells that aren’t a part of Baldur’s Gate 3 spells. Adding them and raising the level cap is a good way to enhance the experience. Since players know how to multiclass in Baldur’s Gate 3, providing new synergies is also a good option. There’s also the concern of BG3 players being overpowered. But considering that the base game itself has issues to iron out, particularly at the end, don’t expect an expansion anytime soon.
