Can you multiclass in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes, you can multiclass with different classes in Baldur’s Gate 3. It wasn’t available during Early Access. But Larian confirmed before the PC release that players would indeed be able to pick up skills from another class in the final release. The system has proven popular since then. You can even switch from one class to another, or respec entirely.
Initially, players were expected to meet the stat requirement. By that, we mean Ability Scores: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. For instance, switching to a Fighter required you to have 13 units in Charisma and Strength. Larian Studios later scrapped this idea prior to launch, confirming in a community post that they had removed Ability Score Prerequisites.
This means that ‘warriors will be able to wield arcane spells, rogues can master divine magic, spellcasters may dabble in martial prowess, and you’ll have the freedom to build the exact class that you want.’ The leveling system now gives players the option to spend points in a different class. This means that you don’t have to pick one or even two classes to invest in. Consider multiclassing with classes that share a main stat like Monk and Rogue for Dexterity.
But remember that spreading your points too thin might not be the optimal way to play. Variants that spend too many points across classes will have many weaknesses. Cheekily, the game developer mentioned an achievement for players who ‘evenly spread all your points into every class for no strategic reason.’ This might mean that you’ll have a hard time clearing objectives across the whole game. But these restrictions could let you think out of the box and make the most of your weapon proficiencies and bonuses like heavy armour and shields. No matter what classes you choose, the level cap in Baldur’s Gate 3 will remain the same.
Best multiclass options in Baldur’s Gate 3
Here are some classes that have really good synergy with each other. They make for the best multiclass possibilities in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Tanky Moon Druid – combining the Moon Druid and the Barbarian class is an interesting combination. While the former can turn into a beast with Wildshape for a massive health boost, the Barbarian’s Rage lets you take half physical damage. It’s a solid defense option. Consider the Berserker if you want to try this build.
- Sorcerer Paladin – pairing the Paladin and Sorcerer classes lets you get into close range and perform devastating spells. The durability of the Paladin lets you perform Divine Smite without worrying too much about health. You can then back it up with high-level sorcery spells and unique abilities. You might not be a specialist mage, but you’ll get more than robes to protect yourself. Boosting Charisma helps both of these classes.
- Rogue Bard – some Bard subclasses get extra attacks, up to three attack actions in a turn. Pairing this with the Rogue’s sneak attacks can be particularly devastating. The Assassin Rogue even gets an advantage on creatures that haven’t entered combat. Dexterity helps both of these classes.
There are plenty more mixes to try out there. Want to try merging a Wizard and a Monk so you can finally deal with close-range enemies? Or a Cleric and Druid for maximum healing? There’s no reason you can’t.

Should you multiclass your characters in Baldur’s Gate 3?
It’s up to each individual player at the end of the day whether or not they want to embrace the multiclass system.
On the one hand, it’s a brilliant way to discover new strategies and ways of fighting. You can create some really competent class mixtures if you know what you’re doing. At the same time, there’s a clear risk to it. Spreading out your points too much or finding a build doesn’t work as well in practice as it did on paper can lead to plenty of frustration, especially if you then have to spend hard-earned gold respecing characters.
One alternative solution is to pick up some Hirelings. These blank-slate mercenaries are perfect test subjects for trying out builds before committing any of your party to them.
That’s about it for multiclass in Baldur’s Gate 3. One helpful NPC even lets you restart your build from Level 1. This means that you can respec starting proficiencies, attributes, spells, and cantrips all over again. Your current class does not have to hold back the second class while dual classing then.
Being able to reset things without a major setback in progression means that experimentation is encouraged in Baldur’s Gate 3. Considering that Baldur’s Gate 3 races already have a great degree of flexibility, this just adds to that. While multiclassing wasn’t available in Early Access, expect to see it show up on the Baldur’s Gate 3 release date.
