The Tournament is an optional side quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows that lets you test your combat chops against feudal Japan’s fiercest fighters. As the name implies, these are organised arena fights that will put all you’ve learned up to this point to the test. But, also earn you the Test Your Might trophy.
The Tournament can be played as either Naoe and Yasuke, but before you can actually duke it out against a series of increasingly tough foes, you’ll need to unlock the quest, which takes some serious story progress. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to unlock and complete The Tournament quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
How to unlock The Tournament in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
To unlock The Tournament, you’ll need to reach Act 2 The Hunt Continues and assassinate 7 out of the 12 Shimbakufu members:
- The Samurai
- The Golden Teppo
- The Wounded
- The Fool
- The Mourner
- The Naginata
- The Fox
Once you’ve killed The Fox, fast travel back to the Hideout and a new quest marker called The Tournament will pop up next to a small pond southwest of the Hideout. Head over to the marker and talk to Gyoji. He’ll explain that he’s set up a lucrative fighting tournament but it’s been taken over by some sketchy sorts. He wants you to fight and rid the land of its most depraved warriors. After the chat, the quest will pop up under People of Yamato on the Objective Board.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows The Tournament walkthrough
To start the quest, you’ll need to head to Ominesanji Temple in the southeast of the Yoshino sub-region of the Yamato province. It’s located just east of the Ominesanji Overlook fast travel viewpoint. It’s a bit of a trek to reach and it’s in a region you’ve likely not ventured into yet. Check the map images above for the exact location.
Once you’re there, talk to Gyoji on the steps overlooking the fighting arena. He’ll present you as a new contender. You’ll now need to win five one-on-one duels to complete The Tournament. To start a fight, ring the bell on the opposite side of the arena.
Here are the five fighters you’ll go up against:
Fighter | Weapon | Reward |
---|---|---|
Lady Masago | Wields a Naginata | Honed Naginata of Swiftness |
Lord Suguru | Wield a Bow and Katana | Exotic Katana of Malice and Drilling Bow of Plenty |
Lord Hokuto | Wields a Kanabo | Forcible Kanabo of Guard |
Lady O-Sen | Wields dual Katanas | Silent Katana of Wandering |
Lord Unkai | Wields a Naginata | Vengeful Foe Legendary Katana and Buildup After Parry Legendary Engraving |
While you should be able to take them on fairly comfortably by this point in the game, you can game the fights to get them over and done with quickly. To do this, unlock the Hidden Blade ability in Naoe’s Tanto skill tree and then turn on Guaranteed Assassination in the options menu. Hidden Blade allows you to perform assassination in combat, effectively letting you one-hit all five of The Tournament bosses. Play as Naoe, build up an adrenaline chuck and unleash the skill. Simple.
Talk to Gyoji up near the viewpoint after defeating all five fighters to complete The Tournament quest. This will earn you 5000 XP but also unlocks new abilities in the Mastery menu: Naoe’s Triple Threat and Yasuke’s Constant Pressure skills. From here, you can now take on the Arena Oscillation weekly Anomaly quest, which tasks you with defeating three new enemies in the tournament.
