You’ve probably heard about everything that’s new with Midjourney V5. In a nutshell, you can expect Midjourney V5 to respond more creatively and accurately to prompts. It also features a much wider stylistic range than before with higher resolutions.

Taking advantage of these new features will involve tweaking the Midjourney settings. Firstly, you’ll need to access Midjourney V5 if you haven’t already.

To do this, you’ll first need a subscription. Then, go into ‘settings’ in Discord, choose the MJ option, then press Enter to apply the changes. Then, when you’re on Midjourney, add v 5 at the command prompt when generating an image.

Midjourney V5 settings explained – how to customize presets

If you want to get the most out of Midjourney V5, you’ll need to be aware of how you can customize the AI to tailor your results. Below we’ve broken down the key settings that can be tweaked according to the kind of image you’re trying to create.

Quality

The quality parameter changes how much time Midjourney spends generating an image. Higher-quality images take longer to process as they produce more details.

Higher values also impact the GPU minutes used per job. The default value is 1.

A helpful tip we found is that higher quality settings aren’t always better – sometimes a lower quality setting can produce better results, depending on what you’re after. To go into a little more detail, lower quality settings are better suited for abstract, gestural images.

Style

The stylize parameter (–stylize or –s) influences how strongly Midjourney produces images that favor artistic color, composition and forms.

Lower stylization values produce images that closely match the prompt but are less artistic.

Different Midjourney Version Models have different stylized ranges – Midjourney V5 currently uses 100 as its default and ranges between 0-10000.

To use the stylize parameter: Add – stylize <value> or –s <value> to the end of your prompt.

To use the settings command: Type /settings and select your preferred stylize value from the menu.

Upscalers

You can use a Midjourney upscaler on any grid image to increase the size and add additional details. There are multiple upscale models available for upscaling an image. Midjourney V5 produces high resolution 1024 x 1024 image grids without needing an additional step to upscale each image.

Look out for the U1, U2, U3 and U4 buttons under each image grid to upscale the selected image.

The latest default upscaler increases image size while smoothing details in the image. There are Light, Detailed, Beta, Anime & Remaster Upscalers that can help optimize images according to specific styles and textures.

Stealth vs Public mode

If you’ve viewed Midjourney’s public library of images, these will have been produced in Public Mode. Subscribers to the Pro Plan (which you need if you want access to V5) can prevent their images from being visible to others on the Midjourney website.

However, Stealth Mode only prevents others from viewing your images on Midjourney.com – images generated in public channels are always visible to other users.

If you want to prevent others from seeing an image you create using Stealth Mode, then generate images in your Direct Messages or on a private Discord server.

Remix mode

Remix Mode is used to alter prompts, parameters, model versions or aspect ratios. At the time of writing, Midjourney has said this is an experimental feature that might change over time.

Type /prefer remix to toggle Remix mode on and off.

Fast vs Relax mode

Your subscription plan will determine the amount of monthly graphics processing units (GPUs) time you get. In case you’re unfamiliar, Midjourney uses GPU to interpret your image prompt. If you’re subscribed to the Standard and Pro plans, you can create an unlimited number of images in Relax Mode.

The average job will take the Midjounrey bot about one minute of GPU time to finish creating an image. Factors like upscaling and nonstandard aspect ratios will increase this time. Using Relax Mode will generally take between 0-10 minutes per job, depending on how often you use it.

You can use /info before and after running a process to see how many of your remaining GPU minutes the generation uses. You can also purchase more Fast Hours on your account page.
