Microsoft 365 Copilot release date speculation

In early May, Microsoft announced that they are bringing Copilot to more customers to try as they introduce new capabilities in an Early Access Program. They also hope that through the feedback they can improve the model even as they scale up.

According to their recent blog post – Microsoft 365 Copilot is already in the hands of some of the biggest companies out there, with plugins already available from Atlassian, Adobe, ServiceNow and others. This only further suggests that we’re going to be seeking a wider release for Microsoft 365 Copilot.

It’s certainly an ambitious project, so we can see why Microsoft wants to take the launch slowly. Not only is Copilot going to embedded into Microsoft 365, but Microsoft have also unveiled the ‘Business Chat’ feature. Let’s have a closer look.

What can Microsoft 365 do?

You will be able to use Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams. Examples of the sort of jobs Copilot could accomplish include summarise large amounts of text, creating tables in Excel and Teams, drafting a PowerPoint drawing on stock photos, and even flagging important emails.

What is the price of Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Microsoft have revealed that Microsoft 365 Copilot will be priced at $30 per user a month. This price applies for Microsoft 365 E3, E5, Business Standard and Business Premium customers.

The price is a substantial premium over the existing costs of Microsoft 365 Plans currently where Microsoft charges businesses $36 a month for Microsoft 365 E3. Microsoft 365 E3 includes access to Office apps, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and other productivity features. A $30 additional cost for Microsoft 465 Copilot will nearly double the cost for E3 businesses. For Microsoft 365 Business Standard, it’s $12.50 per user per month which makes Copilot almost 3 times the cost.

Who can try the Microsoft 365 Copilot Early Access program?

Until recently, only 20 customers have been able to test out Microsoft Copilot. Now though, Microsoft has undergone a paid preview that will initially be available to just 600 customers across the world. The results from the Microsoft 365 Copilot Early Access Program so far, are that “Copilot promises to be a game changer for productivity”.

Indeed, Copilot, like all large language models, will be vulnerable to providing inaccurate information that risks peddling misleading information. Given that Copilot is intended for businesses, the stakes could be pretty high for businesses if things go wrong.

What is Microsoft Business Chat?

Microsoft’s Business Chat is expected to roll out following the introduction of Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Business Chat will combine the LLM (Large Language Model) software with all your Microsoft app data to allow you to use ‘natural language prompts‘ to produce results. Without the romance, Microsoft Business Chat sounds like it could have similar abilities to the AI bot portrayed in the film ‘Her’ given its ability to scan your emails and communicate on your behalf.

The example they gave us was this prompt: ‘Tell my team how we updated the product strategy’ which will apparently result in Copilot sending out the according update having scanned your emails, apps and chat data to get that information.

Microsoft also intend to integrate Copilot in Microsoft Viva. Microsoft say that Copilot will provide ‘insightful conversation starters‘ and offer prompts for questions.
