Unplanned Events Make The Best Plots
With the holidays soon upon them, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) is intent on having the perfect family Christmas. Pestering his wife and children, he attempts to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and home decorations.
Unfortunately for Clark, his hick cousin, Eddie (Randy Quaid), arrives with his family and begins living in their camper on the Griswold’s property. Then, to complicate matters further, Clark’s employers renege on the holiday bonus he needs.

National Lampoon Strikes Gold Instead Of Coal
Most viewers already know what to expect when it comes to most movies in the National Lampoon franchise. Wacky moments filled with laughs and disbelief but a great plot and loveable characters that keep you invested till the end.
What stands out though with this Christmas Vacation installment in the series is how well-rooted the film is with its relatable problems. As, sure, your holiday gatherings typically won’t end in cinema-worthy escapades and constant comedic undertones. (Well, not intentionally anyway…)
But, this movie is relatable because most people watching it can truly say, “I’ve been there.”
As many of us know how it feels to have big plans to enjoy time with the ones we care about most, only to have those plans not work out as intended. Or, having an unexpected family member whom you may love deep down but don’t necessarily want around at the moment arrive at your home.
For, as crazy as each new incident becomes throughout the film. You are always connected and sympathetic to Clark and his plight. Because, at the end of the day, he truly just wants to enjoy Christmas with his family, and don’t we all want that.
This central thread allows the film to include everything needed to present both a fantastic comedy and a fantastic Christmas movie that is one of my personal favorites to watch during the holiday season.
