One of the biggest changes that Call of Duty made to their hit battle royale mode Warzone 2, is that of the Gulag and the way the get-out-of-jail-free system works.

The biggest new aspect of the Warzone 2 gulag, is the fact that you can pair up with another operator to combat in a 2v2 matchup, whereas previously in Verdansk and Caldera, it was only a 1v1 matchup.

Because of the increased gulag matchup size, the arena it takes place in is also bigger and is home to a juggernaut-type AI called ‘The Jailer’, who emerges in the midst of the dual with a Minigun, adding another layer of adversity to hurdle.

Although Call of Duty did a good job thinking outside of the box by exploring different avenues for their new Gulag, the user experience has not panned out as smoothly as they would have hoped for, insinuating quite the response from some fans on Reddit who were calling for the return of a 1v1 Gulag in Warzone 2.

That all said, will a 1v1 Gulag actually make a return? The answer is yes! Here’s what we know.

Infinity Ward and Raven Software announced today that they will indeed be changing the 2v2 Gulag back to 1v1 in Warzone 2 come the launch of the Season 2 update on February 15th, 2023.

With fans voicing their displeasure towards the new Gulag over the last couple of months, Call of Duty finally responded and will be bringing back the 1v1 Gulag many have missed since the launch of Warzone 2.

Why The 2v2 Gulag Needed To Go

Unless you’re playing with a friend, teaming up with a random operator in the Warzone 2 Gulag can be a mighty inconvenience. This is a multifaceted issue and there’s a lot to breakdown.

But the biggest snag that can arise from playing with someone you don’t know, is whether they correspond to the style and tactical approach you want to take in the Gulag. More than often, this is not the case, and teams can get divided really quickly, leading to 2v1 situations that destroy your Gulag odds.

Another gripe amongst the fans, has also been the wait times. Because there’s more than one Gulag in Warzone 2, it can take some time to find teams to play against each other since the Gulag isn’t always flowing with visitors. As a result, this can deflate a players momentum and pace as they sit around for a 60-90 seconds doing nothing.

Lastly, a key contention of the new Warzone 2 Gulag for fans as well, has been The Jailer himself. From his loud narrations that interfere with your audio to having to battle against or work around a big AI wielding a Minigun, fans haven’t been thrilled with his incorporation and understandably so.

Along with various other gripes, Call of Duty saw enough from the community, and ultimately decided it was time to bring back the 1v1 Gulag to Warzone 2 in the highly-anticipated Season 2.
