Though the upcoming animated Super Mario Bros Movie may be some months away, the rumour mill is already grinding on reports of a Donkey Kong spin-off.

That’s according to movie website Giant Freakin Robot, as spotted by Video Games Chronicle. They’re citing “trusted and proven inside sources” as claiming that Seth Rogen has signed on for a solo Donkey Kong movie at Illumination. There’s not much in the way of additional detail. However, the site also notes other cast members from the Super Mario animated movie could also appear in what could be the start of a connected Nintendo cinematic universe.

Some further legitimacy has been poured onto this rumour by Nintendo themselves. During a Q&A session following the company’s financial results briefing today (as per VGC), Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that it is interested in doing more movies. “We would like to roll out with other IPs for movies, etc, people should experience IP in a variety of ways,” he said. (As translated by analyst David Gibson.) “But going one by one, not say, doing many IP movies at same time.”

Of course, there’s the Super Mario Bros Movie itself to get out of the way first. Miyamoto added that apparently the movie is “pretty much done” and they’re “working on the last bit”. Earlier this year, the cast for the film was revealed, including Chris Pratt as Mario and Anna Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. We can expect to see The Super Mario Bros movie land in cinemas in “Holiday 2022.”
