The First Descendant has been out for over a month, and it’s only natural that the player count has dropped from its highest of highs at launch. While some may be concerned about the declining numbers, The First Descendant player count is ultimately nothing for fans to worry about especially compared to other multiplayer experiences like Helldivers 2.

Fans have the release date of Season 1 to anticipate on August 29th, and it’s confirmed that TFD will be part of Gamescom 2024 for Microsoft’s final showcase. TFD has been excellent during its pre-season, and Season 1 should be amazing with the introduction of Hailey, Ultimate Freyna, and more incredible skins for the game’s roster of wicked playable characters.

It’s impossible to deny that The First Descendant player count has noticeably dipped, but the numbers are still very healthy on its own, as well as in comparison to other games such as Warframe and Helldivers 2.

The First Descendant declining player count is nothing to worry about

Since its launch on July 2nd, the player count for The First Descendant has noticeably declined. As shown on SteamDB, its highest all time peak is 264,860, and, as of August 21st, the 24-hour peak has dropped to 52,525.

While it’s a noticeable dip, fans shouldn’t be worried yet. In the publisher’s investors call for August, Nexon reported that, while it “immediately became the top-selling title and was ranked as a top-five most played game on Steam,” most players come from console with “approximately 60%”.

In addition, Nexon attributed the drop in Steam traffic to the loss of casual players. There is recognition that the core player base remains strong, and there is an expectation that the game will remain big and contribute to success in Q3 2024. The release of Season 1 is also imminent, and it’s expected that this will see a jump in player count.

While the decline might seem dire on its own, over 50,000 players a day is very healthy, and it is still one of the most played games on Steam. It currently sits at 26th in the most played games charts, which is only one position behind the extremely popular and successful Warframe.

Other multiplayer games have also experienced hefty player drops. The all time peak for Helldivers 2 is 458,709, and, as of August 21st, the 24-hour peak has dropped to 26,425. Not only that, but True Trophies reports that it has also lost roughly 59% of players on PS5 following the release of its Escalation of Freedom update.

Right now, if you’re a fan of The First Descendant, there is a lot to be excited about. Whether the player count increases or not, Season 1 is still introducing Hailey in just over a week, and Season 2 is pegged for early-December with another new character set to be introduced.
