Sea of Stars has received its final major update, as Sabotage Studio says goodbye to its acclaimed JRPG with the release of the Sunset Edition.
Available now as a free update for existing owners, Sea of Stars Sunset Edition is live on PC via Steam and GOG, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch 2 version also includes GameShare support.
The update was revealed through a new video from Sabotage Creative Director Thierry Boulanger, with the studio positioning Sunset Edition as a final send-off for the game after years of development, updates, and DLC.
Sea of Stars first launched in 2023 and quickly became one of the standout indie RPGs of the year, eventually winning Best Indie at The Game Awards 2023. Since then, Sabotage says the game has been played by more than six million players around the world.
What is in the Sea of Stars Sunset Edition update?
The headline addition in Sea of Stars Sunset Edition is a brand-new cinematic opening, designed to better introduce the game’s story, characters, and world.
For returning players, the new opening also adds fresh context around Sea of Stars’ older heroes, including new scenes that look back at the cataclysm they endured. It sounds like a neat extra for anyone who has already finished the game, especially as it gives players a fresh reason to revisit the opening hours.
The update also includes new key art from artist Bryce Kho, along with revised balancing for both Normal and Hard modes. Sabotage has not positioned this as a total overhaul, but rather as a polishing pass for the final version of the game.
Sea of Stars is inspired by classic ‘90s turn-based RPGs and follows the Children of the Solstice as they combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic. That power is the only thing capable of stopping the Fleshmancer, making the game both a throwback and a modern reworking of the kind of RPG many players grew up with.
Sabotage moves on to Project Sparrow
Sunset Edition also marks the end of active development on Sea of Stars. According to Sabotage, the studio has now fully transitioned to its third game, currently known as Project Sparrow.
It brings to a close a long journey for Sea of Stars, which was developed over seven years and later expanded with two major updates to its main campaign, as well as a free multi-hour DLC adventure.
There is still one more physical treat on the way, though. A Sea of Stars Collector’s Edition is due to ship later this year in collaboration with iam8bit, giving fans one last boxed celebration of the game.
Sea of Stars takes place in the same universe as The Messenger, Sabotage Studio’s debut game. With Sunset Edition now available, the studio’s love letter to classic JRPGs has reached its final form.
