  • Ajax is a support character that relies on barriers.
  • Focus on Hypercube and Orbit Barrier to protect your allies from enemy fire.

Ajax is one of The First Descendant’s three starting characters. While his defensive abilities might not have much of an impact in the early game, he’s crucial in endgame content when a couple of enemy hits can knock players out. With barriers that absorb damage and even reflect attacks at foes, he’s a great choice if you like a playstyle focused on protecting teammates. After testing him across missions and bosses, here’s our best Ajax build, complete with weapon and module choices that account for his strengths.

Our best Ajax build loadout

Ajax is primarily focused on the defensive, with skills that create barriers for his allies. This makes him a great choice in any situation, especially when projectiles assault your team from all sides. While his damage output isn’t impressive, he enhances the DPS of a team by letting them stay in the fight for longer. Here’s a summary of his advantages and weaknesses:

Pros
  • Best dedicated tank.
  • Incredible shielding for allies for various scenarios
Cons
  • Low damage compared to other characters.
  • Reliant on communication with allies.

By shuffling between Hypercube and Orbit Barrier, you’ll be able to keep allies healthy enough to take down Void Intercept bosses like the Hanged Man. And since these scale based on your health and shield values, our best Ajax build focuses on these stats:

  • Modules: Dual Claw, Matrix Recomputation, Shield Conversion MP, Increased DEF, Increased HP, Skill Expansion
  • Reactor: Materialized Mechanics, Materialized Phase
  • External Components: Max HP, Max Shield, DEF, HP Recovery
  • Weapons: Albion Cavalry Gun, Secret Garden, Nazeistra’s Devotion
  • Weapon mods: Mental Focus, Fire Enhancement, Rifling Reinforcement, Action and Reaction, Bullet Rain, Have Aim

Best modules for Ajax

Modules can help this character survive even more lethal hits from foes. This will let you tank damage while weaker allies like Bunny and Freyna can focus on bringing bosses down. We’ve focused on enhancing Ajax’s HP and DEF since some abilities scale with these values. Instead, you could also focus on increasing skill duration or lowering the cooldown of these moves. Here are the best modules you should consider:

ModuleDescription
Dual ClawGain a Sub Attack and increase mod capacity by upgrading this mod.
Matrix RecomputationExpulsion skill enhances the survivability of allies.
Shield Conversion MPLower Max Shield by -x% and increase Max MP by +x%
Increased DEFBuffs DEF by +x%

Skill ExpansionSkill area of effect +x%

Best Reactor and external components for Ajax

When it comes to reactors, opt for those that buff Non-Attribute and Tech skills. This will let you make the most of these items. And don’t forget to equip the optimisation condition weapon mentioned on the item. This will let you enhance your capabilities further. Here’s the reactor we suggest:

  • Materialized Mechanics Reactor (Non-Attribute and Tech)
  • Materialized Phase Reactor (Non-Attribute and Dimension)

And here’s what the best external components of Ajax should focus on:

  • Max HP
  • Max Shield
  • DEF
  • HP Recovery

Best weapons and weapon mods for Ajax

Since Ajax is more reliant on using shields as cover and firing into enemies, you can reload LMGs without worrying about being caught off-guard as much as other DPS-oriented characters. You can also use Beam Rifles, Tactical Rifles, and Sniper Rifles from a distance to target enemy weak spots. Here are the weapons we recommend:

  • Albion Cavalry Gun Light Machine Gun
  • Secret Garden Tactical Rifle
  • Nazeistra’s Devotion Hand Cannon

And here are the weapon mods that can accompany them:

  • Mental Focus: Fire rate -10%, When firing, Firearm ATK +0.25% for up to 2 seconds stacks up to 150 times. Removes effect when reloading or changing firearms.
  • Rifling Reinforcement:  Firearm ATK +12%
  • Fire Enhancement: Adds Fire ATK equal to 8% of Firearm ATK.
  • Action and Reaction: Firearm ATK +15%, Recoil +5%
  • Bullet Rain: +8% Fire Rate, +1.5% Critical Hit Chance
  • Have Aim: Weak Point Damage +10%, Accuracy -5%

Ajax skills and abilities explained

This character’s defensive kit lets them tank incredible amounts of damage, letting them distract Void Intercept bosses and mobs as allies focus on DPS. Here are all his skills:

  • Event Horizon: Ajax passively acquires Void Energy after using any skills. When the Void Energy reaches its maximum amount, it buffs skills and grants additional effects.
  • Orbit Barrier: Creates a shield in front of Ajax. Its durability increases proportionally to Ajax’s HP and DEF values. If it’s enhanced, it reflects damage proportional to DEF to enemies hitting the barrier with gunfire.
  • Void Walk: You leap into the air and land on the ground to strike nearby enemies, stunning them. Stun is a great crowd control option. If enhanced, Max Shield increases for a set duration.
  • Expulsion: Strikes nearby enemies, knocking them back from you. If enhanced, the knockback range and Max Shield are improved.
  • Hypercube: Creates a dome-shaped shield that allies can use for cover. Durability increases proportionally to Ajax’s HP and DEF. If enhanced, it reflects damage proportional to DEF to all enemies hitting the barrier.

How to play as Ajax

Here’s how you can master this character’s toolkit to support your allies:

  • Remember your role in mitigating damage. While you can still damage bosses, your main objective is to ensure the survival of your allies. Hypercube is a great option when it comes to keeping teammates from harm.
  • Since your abilities scale with your health and shield values, use mods to improve them. This gives you more durability while enhancing your skills to keep players from harm.
  • Use Expulsion to create some distance between your team and your enemies. This will let allies continue to fire at nearby mobs at a steady clip.
  • Solo missions might take longer so try clearing missions with teammates whenever possible. While you can still deal decent damage, your kit is focused on survival. And since even weaker characters like Bunny or Viessa can survive most missions, you won’t need these defensive abilities during the campaign.
  • Use Hypercube while reviving allies. This will ensure that you don’t get knocked out as you restore a teammate’s health. It’s particularly useful in boss fights on Hard mode.
