Player counts in video games fluctuate, with games going through periods of growth and decline. However, when games continuously trend downward it can become worrying as it puts players off by giving the perception the game is “dying.” The Finals could be suffering from this as the game is currently at the lowest point it has ever been in terms of player count, with a few issues likely causing it.

Season 2 of The Finals saw a boost in players, taking the average concurrent player count from 20,000-25,000 to over 48,000. Since then, the player count has continued to drop until now it is peaking between 15,000-17,000, down approximately 66% from the start of Season 2 and 92% from its all-time peak. While it is common to see player counts dip following a major update, it is worrying to see The Finals reach an all-time low, with the game having never seen this few people playing the game. The good news, it is still in the top 100 games on Steam, currently at number 81 at the time of writing.

The Finals has recently been facing a lot of criticism from the community due to the excessive amount of cheaters in the game, which could play a part in the player count dropping as people simply log off and play another game instead. Despite this, Embark Studios is still hard at work bringing new content to the game.

Season 3 is set to bring a new map to the game, and a new Attack & Defend game mode was recently announced. Hopefully, these will both contribute to the player count increasing again as The Finals is a good FPS game and is regularly praised by its players as being a “breath of fresh air” in a world dominated by Call of Duty and Fortnite.
