Of course it was expected that Tears of the Kingdom would be well received by critics, but it seems the new game might have surpassed all expectations on review aggregator sites too.
Over on OpenCritic, The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom now sits pretty as the highest rated game on the site with a whopping 97 average score from critics. That puts it in rarified air and taking the record from the site’s previously highest rated games Super Mario Odyssey (also scoring 97) and, as you’d probably expected, the previous Zelda title Breath of the Wild at 96.
At the time of writing, that average score comes from 63 critic reviews – many of which you can check out in our recent Tears of the Kingdom review round up – with plenty of 10s and 5-star ratings making up the ‘100% Critics Recommend’ badge of honour proudly displayed on its page.
It’s not quite the same story on fellow ratings ranking site Metacritic – although it’s not far off. Over there, it has an average critic score of a still very respectable 96 Metascore. That means it’s currently sitting at number 36 there, but another Zelda game – the Nintendo 64 classic Ocarina of Time – is the title that has proudly sat at number one over there with a whopping 99 metascore. TOTK’s performance, then, is certainly nothing to be sniffed at – and reviews are still coming in, so it has time to build on that yet.
Players are getting their hands on Tears of the Kingdom today, and are already finding ingenious methods to skip to boss fights – and there’s sure to be plenty more where that came from.
