Sons of the Forest, the equally horrifying sequel to Endnight Games’ 2014 creation, has quickly become one of the most popular survival horror titles in recent memory.

Though most of its renown was gained through the use of multiple gameplay trailers, the added features and attention to detail that the developers have shown also can’t be ignored. Several aspects of the latest installment were drastically improved upon, causing some within the community to regard it as being better than the original.
But what exactly are some of the most notable changes between both games? This question is exactly what we’ll be trying to answer by showing you five differences between Sons of the Forest and the Forest.
5 Differences Between Sons of the Forest and The Forest
Dynamic Seasons
One of the most important features that Endnight Games has added to Sons of the Forest is its dynamic seasons. After a certain period of time, each season will change along with the weather that it brings. This significantly affects all living things within the island, including the mutants and the cannibals. This is drastically different from its predecessor since there was no dynamic weather in the previous game.
Spring and Summer are naturally the most ideal seasons as these are when animals, fruits, and other resources will be most abundant. Winter, on the other hand, will remove most of these, which means you will need to stock up on food and water beforehand. Keep in mind, though, that because the animals within forests are absent, the hostile beings within will be looking for their own meals.
AI Companions
A set of extra hands is always useful, especially within the game’s hellish island so the news that AI companions can now join your group was certainly welcomed by the community. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that you will not be able to directly control their entire being. Although you can give them a few instructions, like following and taking items, they will also be performing actions depending on how they feel.
There are two that you’ll be able to find throughout the course of the game, namely Virginia and Kelvin. The former is a mutant that is part of the billionaire family you’re supposed to be looking for. On the other hand, the latter is a soldier that was on one of the plans that crashed at the beginning of the game.

Much Bigger Map
According to the developers, the map in Sons of the Forest is four times bigger than in the first game. This means that there’ll be more places to explore and discover, but this similarly indicates that there will be more areas where enemies can come from.
Since Sons of the Forest is still only in early access, the entirety of the island hasn’t been fleshed out with content yet. In the coming months, however, more items, locations, and enemies will eventually be added to the game.
Sanity Mechanic Removed
One of the biggest features that’s excluded in Sons of the Forest was the Sanity system. Although this mechanic was only maintained in order to build effigies, some players still can’t help but notice its absence. A few players are even hoping for its reinstatement into the game, albeit with a few tweaks that impact the characters themselves.
Advanced AI System
AI in Sons of the Forest, both friendly and hostile, will now be using a significantly improved system that makes their patterns less robotic and more human-like. Every foe or NPC you encounter in the game will be able to perform actions based on how they are currently feeling. They will also display the appropriate emotion under the right circumstances, like fear or anger. However, this advanced way of thinking also means that your enemies will now be able to launch coordinated attacks on your base, making the game much more difficult.
Even though there are a ton of differences and improvements in Sons of the Forest, it’s still largely an incomplete game due to the fact that it’s in early access. However, the joint efforts of the player base and the developers will surely make this an even better title that will meet everyone’s expectations once it finally releases.
