EA has revealed that Skate 4 is actually just called Skate, and it will be a free-to-play game, coming to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. But we still don’t know if it will be a next-gen only game.

Developer Full Circle has offered assurance that the game won’t be pay-to-win. And that micro-transactions will only be for cosmetic items and fully optional.

There is a new video series, “The Board Room.” (It’s a clever pun, because the game entails skateboards.) Check out the video below:

Note, also, the little full stop that comes after the word “skate.” This is, apparently, in order to drive home the fact that this game will not be iterative. This is the game for the foreseeable future for Skate fans.

I imagine some will lament the fact that this is not Skate 4. It is not a sequel to Skate 3. And, naturally, many will raise an eyebrow over the idea that it is free to play. The setting is San Vansterdam, and that is apparently within the same world as the other games. They took place in San Vanelona.

So there you have it. Skate will be out at some point—no idea when—and it will be on consoles and PC. But we don’t quite know about last-gen yet. Perhaps it will be next-gen only, because a Switch version isn’t listed, either.

In other recent Skate news, the closed playtest went down very well with people generally. However, someone was able to hack the playtest and circulate it online, for anyone to download. EA then urged people not to download and play that version:

“We’re aware of an earlier version of the game that has been distributed without our authorization. This build is from September 2021 and was never intended for external use.”
