It’s been a very good year for video games with mega releases such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The lowest point of the year so far has been Gollum, but, believe it or not, The Lord of the Rings massacre now has fierce competition for the worst game of the year with the new King Kong video game, Skull Island Rise of Kong.

If you fancy tickling your curiosity, you can buy Skull Island Rise of Kong on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Per the PSN store, it is stunningly $39.99/£44.99. What it promises to deliver is an epic adventure where, as the almighty Kong, you embark on a quest to avenge the death of your parents killed by the alpha predator, Gaw. You will roam across the fabled skull island and you will battle a rogue of terrifying beasts in ferocious battles to the death.

While the premise is ambitious, the unfortunate truth is that the game resembles an abomination more visually outdated than the original King Kong movie from back in 1933.

The new King Kong Skull Island game looks bananas

There’s a new King Kong game coming out on October 17th, and it somehow looks even worse than the Gollum fan fiction released earlier this year. A brief cutscene of the Skull Island Rise of Kong has been shared on Twitter, and the footage simply speaks for itself. Of course, fans are having fun joking that it’s sure to win game of the year.

In addition to a very brief cut-scene, gameplay of the upcoming adaptation has also been shared. And, as you’d expect, it’s as pretty as the wildly outdated graphics and poor sound design. Users have joked that ‘God of War wishes its combat was as good,’ meanwhile, others have pointed out that it’s even worse than Godzilla on the PS4.

As you’d expect, comparisons were made between this abomination and The Lord of the Rings Gollum visuals. Some have knighted the game as Lord of Kong Skull Island, whereas others are bemused by how bad it looks. As the meme goes, expectations were low, but they were not this low. And it’s truly a shame for fans of the goliath gorilla as we haven’t been treated to a good King Kong video game since the adaptation of the 2005 movie from, ironically enough, Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson.

Lord of the Rings Gollum is currently one of the worst-rated games of the year so far with a woeful 34 on Metacritic. It’ll be interesting to see if we have a new Razzie award winner when reviews for Kong come out. In addition, it’ll be interesting to see if an apology is issued similar to the Gollum devs.

On the other hand, if you’d like to play a good licensed IP, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to launch on October 20th. Granted, some fans have dubbed the Mary Jane face model as ugly as Kong with players viciously roasting new screenshots of Peter and MJ, but the game is still a 10/10 masterpiece as praised in our review.
