Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) has been off to an exciting start – but it has been by no means perfect. This can be felt firsthand in multiplayer, where glitchy instability, a complex user interface, and certain limitations have all too often thwarted the online experience in Call of Duty’s new game.

As a result of these imperfections, several questions have surfaced, including whether MW2 has split screen play available for multiplayer, and if it does, whether it works?

In previous Call of Duty games, split screen play has been an option and granted friends and family alike to enjoy the online mode together in person.

However, it hasn’t been clear if MW2 has split screen play this year and fans have been inquiring whether there will be any form of it in the new game?

To clarify, split screen play is available and working on Modern Warfare 2, but in limited capacity. From the amount of people you can play with to what game modes you can specifically play, split screen isn’t so straightforward on MW2, which is why there might have been some misconceptions with why it wasn’t working.

To give you the full picture of what you need to know, we’re going to break this down in two parts. Let’s have a look.

MW2: How To Set Up Split Screen

First and foremost, you can only have two players participating in split screen play and no more than two. In previous Call of Duty games, it used to be three if not four split screens at a time. However, that is not the case in MW2 this year.

In addition, the guest player will either need to use an existing profile on the console that is being used or will have to sign in with their own account. Once you reach the multiplayer menu, the guest player will be able to join. However, in order to use their own guns and classes from their own account, the guest player will need to log in with their Activision profile.

MW2: Split Screen Game Modes

Though split screen play is available on MW2, it is limited to a select amount of game modes. Some of the modes that don’t allow split screen consist of Ground War, Free-For-All, Invasion, and Spec Ops.

Besides these select few, the following list of game modes do allow split screen play:

  • Hardpoint
  • Domination
  • Kill Confirmed
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Search And Destroy
  • 3rd Person Moshpit
  • Prisoner Rescue
  • Headquarters
  • Knock Out

Naturally, if fans want to play split screen in private lobbies, they can do so as well. But if you are looking to enjoy the split screen experience online, the ‘Quick Play’ menu will need to consist of any of the game modes listed above in order to work.
