How To Add Friends in Modern Warfare 2

There a two ways to add friends on MW2 – via your individual system and via Activision ID.

The latter is designed to help with crossplay, especially for Steam users who want to game with friends who own consoles.

Method 1: Individual System

Adding Friends on MW2 on PlayStation and Xbox

The first is the easier method and the one you’re likely more familiar with. Depending on whether you’re a PlayStation or Xbox owner, you just need to add your friend’s PSN Online ID or Xbox Gamertag to your Friends List.

For PlayStation you need to:

• Step 1: Head to the home screen
• Step 2: Navigate to Add Friends
• Step 3: Search for the player via their PSN ID
• Step 4: Select the player and click Add 

For Xbox you need to:

1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
2. Select People > Find someone.
3. Search for a gamertag.
4. Press the A button to select the account that you want to add.
5. Select Add friend to add the person’s Xbox profile to your friends list.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to find them in Modern Warfare 2, using the ‘Social’ menu. On the ‘Friends’ tab, you’ll see a list of friends on the same platform.

Method 2: Activision ID

If you want to add friends from Steam, you’ll need to add them via something called an ‘Activision ID’. This was set up when you started playing Modern Warfare 2.

If you or your friend don’t know or have forgotten your Activision ID, you just need to log in to your account using the password and email associated with it.

In the Account Summary, you’ll see your Activision ID – which is the name you’ll appear as in-game. If you’re stuck, you can visit Activision Support here.

Once you’ve done that, follow these steps:

• Step 1: Navigate to the Social tab on the game (this is in the top right of the in-game menu)
• Step 2: Select ‘Add Friends’
• Step 3: You’ll be promoted to put in your friend’s Activision ID

Once this has been confirmed on their side, you’ll be able to play together.

How To Add Crossplay Friends in Modern Warfare 2

Adding crossplay friends in MW2 is a slightly different process than the previous steps listed above.

If you’re looking to connect with crossplay friends, you will need to complete the following steps. The first is making sure you have your crossplay setting switched in on. Here’s how to do so:

• Step 1: Visit ‘Settings’ in main menu and scroll down to ‘Account & Network’
• Step 2: Upon clicking ‘Account & Network’ switch on ‘Crossplay’
• Step 3: While in that same menu, make sure to also switch on ‘Crossplay Communication’

With that all squared away, the next step is to actually send a friend request to your crossplay friend. To do so, you will need to do the following:

• Step 1: Visit ‘Social Page’ in main menu
• Step 2: Shift over to ‘Friends’ tab and click ‘Add Friends’
• Step 3: Type in their Activision ID and send

Sending requests to your crossplay friends just by typing in their gamer tags in the MW2 search bar, will not work. If you somehow forget their Activision ID, you can also send a request by searching your friends Network Online ID, and once you locate them, can send them a request that way. But as you can see, having their Activision ID will make things a lot easier.
