Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) has been out for quite some time – but for some, they’re experiencing the game crashing on PC.
If this happens, don’t worry, there are things you can do about it, which is where we come in. We’ve got a couple of potential fixes for those experiencing MW2 crashes on Steam and Battle.net.
Before doing all of this, it’s worth checking that you have a system that can handle the game. You can look at the MW2 system requirements right here. It is not a particularly graphically intensive game. But those wanting to run the game at the highest settings will need at least 16GB of RAM.

MW2 Keeps Crashing On PC – Potential Fixes
Scan and Repair The Game’s Files
This can happen sometimes, where the game files downloaded may be corrupt.
To fix this follow these steps if using Battle.net:
- Open Battle.net application
- select the cog next to the blue play button and press ‘scan and repair’.
- The game will then reload and the issue may be solved
On Steam, please follow these steps:
- Right-click on the game in your library
- Click on properties then local files
- Select the option to verify integrity of game files.
Check Your Game’s Drivers
This sounds like a no brainer, but if you’re running a driver behind, it could not only hinder performance but may also be causing issues. The latest drivers can be downloaded by following the links below. For Nvidia users, make sure to install Geforce Experience to optimize your game.
Close Other Applications
Make sure that you limit the use of other applications which will take up CPU bandwidth and again could be causing issues.

Check Your Hardware
Ultimately, it could be your hardware that is the problem and could eventually be fatal to where you’ll need to swap out parts to see what the problem is.
This is last resort (hopefully) but it would be good practice to test your hardware to ensure it isn’t a hardware issue and could be singled to software only.
Check File Integrity
MW2 could be crashing potentially due to file integrity which indicates that there is some corrupt files in the initial MW2 folder.
Doing a thorough scan of the games’ files may find the culprit shorter than you anticipated and you’re lucky as Battle.net have their own file checker for you to use!
If file integrity is unfortunately the culprit, reinstalling the game will allow the files to be wiped for a fresh slate. Hopefully this can resolve the faulty files that have crept into your game files!
