Many in the Call of Duty community are eagerly awaiting the release of Modern Warfare 3, but there’s a contingent who are growing weary of the battle pass, and are hoping for a change in MW3.
The battle pass has become something of a Call of Duty staple over the last few years. Following the game’s launch, a bunch of regular seasonal updates are brought to the game along with the usual battle pass encouraging them to play the game to unlock unique prizes – usually cosmetics such as new operators, new weapon blueprints and the like. However, despite – or maybe even because of – a number of unusual additions to the game’s costume collection such as content including Spawn or The Boys, some are growing weary of the tried-and-tested method of delivering new content to the game. Over on the Modern Warfare 2 subreddit, a thread started by aimstotheleft voices a lot of player concerns, asking if anyone else is suffering from battle pass fatigue. “I just can’t do it anymore, and it’s not just CoD’s Battle pass. Too many games want too many of my hours dedicated to each of them. CoD is just the loudest and pervasive of them all.”
The time pressure to get things done – many battle passes only let you unlock their content for a limited time, before they’re gone forever – is certainly a factor. “Yeah, battle passes demand way too much time, it turns the game into a chore.” says PeineDeMort. Y0ur3-n0-D4isy agrees, and also posits “It didn’t used to be like that. I used to clear a battle pass easily, every time, long before a season ended. Now I haven’t gotten through any since S1 of this game. Didn’t buy the last one,” while Frequent_Ad_3350’s sentiments echo a lot of us of a certain age. “I had literally exact same thing – S1 = 100%. Rest of the seasons, I just didn’t have the time after my 9-5 job.”
There are some who still enjoy the battle pass system – but point to other games as having much better examples of how to do the battle pass system. “I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but I think Halo Infinite did it well,” says Sandman_LXV “Once you’ve got a battle pass it’s yours forever and never goes away, you can complete it at your leisure and switch between them whenever you want.” There’s also those who think the current rewards for MW’s battle passes are just too far out of reach in the game’s current state. “My friend and I have been trying to complete at least 1 sector a day after work so we can get Spawn and it’s been exhausting,” says ThatGuy21134. “They need to give us Double BP XP until MW3 launches at least.”
At this stage, it’s a little early to say what plans Activision or Sledgehammer Games have in store for MW3’s battle pass, but it’s fair to say a lot of people will be interested to hear of some refreshes and changes come the Modern Warfare 3 release date. Before then, however, the MW3 beta start time is nearly here and will be allowing PC and Xbox players their first hands-on with the new game.
