Crystal Dynamics has removed the ability to buy items in Marvel’s Avengers that allowed players to boost their XP following heavy fan criticism.

The studio offered up an apology in a statement to Twitter. “We apologise for not responding sooner to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables in the Marketplace. We introduced them as an option for an evolving player base, and did not see them as pay-to-win since they don’t offer power directly.”

The additions arrived in a patch released at the end of August allowing players to buy Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors. Both were consumable items that increased the amount of XP and shards a hero could earn. Though they’ll no longer be purchasable with real money, you’ll still be able to earn them through gameplay.

Much of the contention also came from a blog post at the end of August of 2020, before the game’s release. The post said at the time “We’ve also committed that content purchasable with real money in Marvel’s Avengers will be aesthetic-only additions, which will ensure we can keep the game fresh for years to come.”

Marvel’s Avengers will still get new content in the near future, with the PlayStation-exclusive addition of Spider-Man still on the way.
