Blimey, would you Adam and Eve it? Yep, that’s another week done and dusted, and with it a whole bunch of (hopefully) exciting video game news to digest. Being an EastEnders fan, I know how important catching up on stuff is, so that’s why I’m here to guide you through the biggest gaming stories of the past week before you bugger off down the pub, play some Fortnite, fire up Netflix, or do whatever it is you do on a Friday night. But first, I’ll get the important stuff out of the way…
Crap. Gary Numan played the Albert Hall and Shepherd’s Bush Empire this past week in London, and I didn’t even know about it. He even did ‘My Breathing,’ which he never performs. Frankly, I’m gutted I missed him; Gaz’s last few albums have been mint, and his last effort, Songs from a Broken World, is probably his best – right up there with Telekon, for sure. Oh well.
Meanwhile, EastEnders fans were losing their s**t this week, with the return of the Human Beetroot, aka Phil Mitchell. He rocked up just as Sharon had Keanu not Reeves handcuffed to the bed, while daughter Louise and Keegan were, erm, ‘exploring’ their relationship on the kitchen floor. Still, one half of the Mitchell Bruvvers is better than none, which means ‘Enders is worth watching again.
And Blimey, let’s hope Danny ‘I’m f***ing Danny Dyer’ Dyer doesn’t read the tabloids. His daughter’s latest squeeze, Jack, has revealed that he and Dani have been enjoying ‘amazing’ bedroom antics.
Cliff Bleszinski will ‘never’ make another video game
Boss Key Productions shut down back in May, although at the time Cliff indicated he would be just taking a break from the spotlight and returning to game development. However, during a Twitter exchange with a troll complaining about refunds for LawBreakers, the man previously known as CliffyB stated unequivocally that his days of video game making are done and dusted. He later followed up with another post in an exchange with GI.biz confirming, ‘I’m done.’
The Walking Dead: The Final Season resumes development at Skybound
With Telltale Games closing down for good, it’s looking pretty unlikely we’ll ever see Stranger Things and the second season of The Wolf Among Us. Fortunately, The Walking Dead has been saved by Skybound, and it’s now confirmed that development on the remaining two episodes – Broken Toys and Take Us Back – has kicked off at Robert Kirkman’s studio. We’re also promised that release dates for the episodes will be announced soon, although at this point I don’t imagine we’ll get one of them before Christmas.
Resident Evil 2 producer says that it would be ‘interesting’ to remake fixed-camera titles
Capcom has openly said that it’s willing to consider sprucing up other titles in its back catalogue, and Resident Evil is definitely one franchise that would benefit. In terms of static-camera titles, there’s a couple that would make obvious candidates. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is probably the most likely choice, given that from a narrative point of view it’s linked heavily with Resi 2 and could potentially reuse assets. Beyond basic ports to PC and other consoles, it’s never received any form of overhaul, so that’s another reason it’d make a great candidate. Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil could also be tarted up, although I’m not sure that Capcom would remake Resi 1 a second time. Code: Veronica on the other hand would benefit from a modern facelift; while it was pretty groundbreaking as the first 3D Resi back in 2000, it’s aged about as well as Axl Rose.
Kingdom Hearts 3 development has ‘wrapped up’ says game director
It’s been over five years since Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced at E3, and in retrospect, Square Enix probably could have waited a couple more years before unveiling the Mickey Mouse-starring sequel. I also realised it’s been nearly 15 year since Kingdom Hearts 2 arrived, which makes me feel like a relic. Still, there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel (and for once, it’s not a train), with Square Enix confirming this week that development has wrapped. Hooray! With any luck, it’ll hit its January 29, 2019 launch date without any hitches. Probably. Maybe… well, okay, fingers crossed just in case, right?
Top 10 best-selling exclusive since 1995 all on Nintendo platforms
Sometimes it’s easy to forget just massive the Wii was back in the day, but a quick glimpse at the NPD’s list of 10 top-selling exclusives serves as a succinct reminder. It’s rammed full of Wii games; not a single PlayStation, Xbox, or Sega title made the list. Pleasingly, the N64 got a look in with the genre-defining Super Mario 64, but other than that, it’s pretty predictable. Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros., and Wii Play leave no room sod all else.
Diablo IV originally started out as a Souls-like, over-the-shoulder game
Blizzard probably still has a lot of kissing and making up to do for its fans after the whole Diablo Immortal reveal, but reports from Kotaku at least suggest that Diablo IV – you know, the game people actually wanted – is shaping up well. Apparently it’s been rebooted once already, although its current incarnation is aesthetically more in line with the classic Diablo games, which should please fans. To be fair, I haven’t really got any connection to the series, so an over-the-shoulder, Souls-esque affair might have compelled me to take the plunge.
Rumour: Microsoft planning new Xbox One S without disc drive
With murmurs of Xbox Scarlett launching as a cloud-based model alongside a standard hardware version, a disc-less Xbox One S would make a lot of sense. It’d be a opportunity to test the waters and see how consumers react to a fully digital Xbox, not to mention slashing manufacturing costs in the process.
