Industry analyst Dr Serkan Toto has claimed that a new Mario Kart is in development for the Nintendo Switch.

Toto works for consultancy agency Kantan Games in Tokyo, Japan. He was speaking to GamesIndustry.biz on his predictions for the year 2022, including a new entry in Nintendo’s racing series. “I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year.”

It’s been a whopping eight years since Mario Kart 8 first launched on the Wii U back in 2014. An updated re-release for the Nintendo Switch entitled Mario Kart 8 Deluxe followed three years later. It rapidly became the console’s best selling game of all time, smashing records and still a regular feature at the top of the system’s software charts today. In November, it became the best selling entry in its own series with 38.74 million units sold worldwide.

The series hasn’t been entirely silent in the interim, of course. Mario Kart Tour launched for mobiles in 2019, and an AR game with real remote control karts called Mario Kart: Home Circuit arrived on Nintendo Switch in 2020.

A potential Mario Kart 9 seems like something of a no-brainer, but Nintendo are a notoriously guarded company. It’s also worth noting that the company hasn’t released more than one main entry per console previously. Either way, we likely won’t get confirmation until it’s almost ready to launch, but maybe we’ll hear more soon.
