It appears that Konami is working on another remake of a classic Hideo Kojima game after the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater later this year. While unnamed by Konami at the time of writing, new job listings suggest the Japanese studio is working on an Unreal Engine 5 remake of fast-paced mech game Zone of the Enders.
Is Konami remaking Zone of the Enders?
On the Japanese careers page of the official Konami website, the studio has teased an upcoming project in the early stages of development. In a job posting for a “CG character modeller”, the studio reveals some information on the upcoming game.
For the new video game, Konami is looking for a 3D modeller for “pre-vis production of cel-look character model” and “production of mecha models”.
While the Metal Gear Solid series does have a large number of mechs—the titular Metal Gears—the mention of a “cel-look”, despite it’s rough translation to English, means that the next game is likely targeted a cel-shaded look, similar to games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.
With this in mind, it seems likely that Konami is looking to revive Zone of the Enders, a cel-shaded action series created by Metal Gear Solid visionary Hideo Kojima. This wouldn’t be the first remake for the series. In fact, a full remake with VR support was released in 2018 dubbed Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Mars.
In recent years, Konami has gone all in on remakes, alongside a few original Silent Hill projects still in development. After the success of Silent Hill 2 and the expected success of Metal Gear Solid Delta, it would be unsurprising to see the studio attempt another stab at Zone of the Enders.
Hideo Kojima did originally plan a third entry in the action series back in 2008 and started development in 2012. However, this project was scrapped following the release of the dodgy HD Collection, although that HD remaster was miles ahead of Konami’s Silent Hill HD Collection released during the same period.
Whatever the case, it’s exciting to see more of Kojima’s sci-fi universe, although the creator likely won’t be involved after his historic departure from Konami after the release of The Phantom Pain and cancellation of Silent Hills.
