With the upcoming release of Metal Gear Solid 3: Delta, Konami is striking back hard into the AAA games industry. Alongside the release of Silent Hill 2 Remake, the controversial games company is making its grand return.
However, the return of Metal Gear comes without the series’ creator Hideo Kojima. In a new interview, Konami accepts that it doesn’t have anyone quite on the level of Kojima working at the studio, but it sees potential in some of its developers.
Metal Gear Solid’s next Kojima
Speaking to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, producer Noriaki Okamura confirmed that no one at Konami has taken on Hideo Kojima’s role. With the creative vision of Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta focusing on being as faithful a remake as possible, no one has needed to step up, but could they?
“In terms of someone to sort of replace that creative director role, there isn’t really a single person that has taken over,” Okamura said. “But rather, we’ve created this new Metal Gear Solid team – we’ve got a great team full of young new creative minds, a very talented team that are currently working on this game together.”
Okamura explained that there are multiple talented developers who could take on the role. However, no one has taken over quite yet.
“Within this team there are many people that we think in the future as well could definitely be people like that, who could create these new ideas, have these creative visions, and this is definitely a team that we would like to develop and grow into roles like that,” the producer said. “But there isn’t a specific person that has taken over, necessarily, it’s much more of a team effort.”
Staying true to Kojima’s vision
For Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta, the team at Konami is aiming to stick as close as possible to Kojima’s original vision.
“Obviously we have a lot of respect towards his creative vision,” the producer explained. “And in terms of our new team, we’d like to create these games in our own way with our own talented team that we have, with our own creative ideas for the current generation of fans, and the next generation of fans as well.”
Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta releases on PlayStation, Xbox and PC later in 2024.
