Arrowhead Game Studios recently announced the first major update to come to Helldivers 2 titled Escalation of Freedom. This new update will bring new mission types, enemies, difficulties, planets, and quality-of-life changes such as preventing grief kicking. One of the additions is the Impaler, an enemy that was in the first game. But, with the majority of the community having never played the first game, they are going to take players by surprise.

U/RandomRon005 took to the Helldivers 2 sub-Reddit to discuss the new Impaler enemies that were seen in the Escalation of Freedom trailer. These enemies were in Helldivers 1 so anyone that has been playing the series prior to 2024 will have encountered these. The Impaler is three tentacles that appear out of the ground and can often cut you off from escaping hordes of Terminids.
U/jonasowtm8 took to the comments to ask how they are taken out, with u/scurvybill sharing that “If it’s like the first game, hit it with anti-tank. Alternatively, the tentacles make a face shield. When deployed into the ground, it exposes the fleshy bits in its face.”
U/Rubberbabybumperbugy also noted that “The face is armored by the tentacles, when they deploy its weak spot is revealed. You can damage the tentacles to make them retract, but it won’t do any permanent damage, just buys you breathing room. It also becomes immobile when deployed, so use orbitals then.”
Hopefully, the Impaler won’t prove to be too much of an issue and players will quickly find a useful strategy to easily deal with them. But, they’re not the only new Terminid enemy that is coming in the Helldivers 2 Escalation of Freedom update. There is also the Spore Charger which “is shrouded in fog to obscure its location until it’s right up on you,” as well as the Alpha Commander, which is a supercharged Brood Commander.
Helldivers 2 players don’t have long to wait until they can jump into the new update, which lands on August 6th. In addition to new enemies, there will also be a new level 10 difficulty that goes beyond Helldive, which will surely push gamers to their limits. With some time to wait until Escalation of Freedom, now is a great time to optimize your loadout as you take part in the latest Major Order.
