With everything he’s been through across the various ‘God of War’ games, you have to wonder, how old exactly is Kratos?

As we know he’s a demi-god, we know he’s the former Greek God of War, but does he age? Does he age slower than a regular human? Is he immortal? Is he just lucky? Does he just have great genes?

The question of Kratos’ age becomes even more curious by the fact that we can fairly easily work out Atreus’ age at the time of ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ as my colleague Nico did in this article.

But, before, I start trying to figure out just how old Kratos may or may not be, make sure that your copy of ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ is right up to date as Santa Monica Studios have released a Day One patch for the game. If you haven’t heard about this, all the information you need is right here.

What is Kratos’ age in God of War Ragnarok?

As best as I and others can tell based on what we know of ‘Ragnarok’, Kratos is roughly 983 years old at the beginning of the game even though he looks like he’s at least in his 40’s if not possibly in his 50’s.

Now you’re probably wondering how I’ve come up with this figure or if I just picked a random number that I thought sounded about right, and honestly, the truth lies somewhere in between.

As, we have yet to be given an official confirmation of Kratos’ age in ‘Ragnarok’. So, this means we have to work backwards from ‘Ragnarok’ in order to try and deduce what his age could be.

As ‘God of War III’ we know takes place during the destruction of Sparta, which although the events of the game are fictional, were inspired by and based on on the very real destruction of Sparta which occurred in 464BC due to a catastrophic earthquake.

Following on from this, we know that ‘God of War’ (2018) ends with the beginning of Fimbulwinter. Which, in Norse mythology, is the great winter that signals the beginning of the end as the winter kills all life on earth before Ragnarok takes place which sees the gods battling for their lives, with those who then survive said to meet their fellow survivors and returning gods in the new world that arises to begin anew.

The mythology of Ragnarok is believed to have come from the real life volcanic winter of 536AD. So, if we take the destruction of Sparta in 464BC as our starting point and the volcanic winter of 536AD as our ending point. This gives us a time difference of 928 years.

Then, based on historical records of Spartan customs, it’s likely that Kratos was between 30 and 40 years of age at the beginning of the original ‘God of War’.

So, using that now as our base, we add on the 12 years that Kratos spent as the God of War following the events of the first game leading into the climax of ‘God of War III’. This would make Kratos between 42 and 52 years of age.

Okay, now we’re getting somewhere as we’ve established that the end of ‘God of War III’ takes place roughly 928 years before the beginning of Fimbulwinter at the end of ‘God of War’ (2018). We can add his presumed age from the end of ‘III’ to this time difference to get an age roughly between 970 years and 980 years old.

Finally, if we add on the three year time difference between the end of ‘God of War’ (2018) and ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ to this figure, we get our rough age of 983 years old.

Now, I’ll be completely honest, when I was asked to write this article, I had no clue that it would lead me to sub-consciously trick myself into doing maths, but here we are.
