It doesn’t take long for ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ to reveal Odin, the King of the Norse Pantheon, whose mere name can cause shudders of dread, disgust, and anger to those who hear it as they know that he is a god you underestimate at your own peril.

And in ‘God of War: Ragnarok‘, Odin walks with the presence of a man who has seen ages come and ages pass and who knows what danger, if left unchecked, that Kratos and Atreus can present to his rule.

But, the question that many fans find themselves asking when the god known as “The All Father” makes his understated entrance is “I know that voice”.

As while his appearance is somewhat familiar. It is his voice that is almost instantly recognisable, and there is a very good reason for this.

As Odin is played by none other than celebrated film, television, and theatre actor, Richard Schiff. Who, depending on your age and viewing preferences, you will recognise from any number of roles. Before we dive in, you can find out who plays who in our God of War Ragnarok cast list right here.

For instance, if you watched ‘The West Wing’, you will recognise Schiff as White House Communications Director, Toby Ziegler. A role that he played in 145 episodes of the seminal series between 1999 and 2006.

Or, maybe you recognise him from as performance as the heroic DARPA scientific advisor, Dr. Emil Hamilton, in ‘Man of Steel’, who helps the US military better understand Superman and the other Kryptonians.

Whereas fans of Dwayne Johnson’s HBO football comedy drama ‘Ballers’ will recognise Schiff from his performance as Mr Anderson, the boss of Johnson’s retired football player, now business adviser, Spencer Strasmore. But, regardless of which of his many on screen performance you recognise him from. We can all agree that he is certainly a major name to be cast as Odin, if not one that is initially surprising.

For, as brilliant a performer as Mr Schiff is, he is arguably not the first name that would spring to mind when casting Odin after years of watching Ian McShane play Odin in ‘American Gods’ or Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Odin in the MCU in ‘Thor’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, and ‘Thor: Ragnarok’.

But then that is the brilliance of God of War: Ragnarok’s creative director Cory Barlog and his team at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. As they don’t set out to do what gamers expect them to do but rather what will invest gamers the most in the story of the game that they’re playing.

‘God of War: Ragnarok’ is available now both digitally and physically for Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.
